Khloé Kardashian’s OCD Experience is Not One-Size-Fits-All, Fans Stress
The Kardashian Jenner sisters — especially Khloé Kardashian — are becoming well known for their tone-deaf social media posts. Naturally, it’s hard for them to relate to the average person.
The sisters are all multimillionaires. Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner are almost billionaires. But Khloe Kardashian’s recent social media gaffe cannot be explained by her wealth. Fans feel she was insensitive, and that she needs to educate herself on mental illness.
Khloé Kardashian called OCD ‘a blessing’
Khloé is well known for being the most organized KarJen sister. Although she does hire professional organizers, she enjoys sorting and cleaning herself, at least sometimes. She’s referred to her love of order as Khlo-C-D in the past.
That’s a combination of her name and OCD, which stands for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. The disorder is characterized by any obsessive behavior, but many people associate OCD with a preoccupation with cleanliness and organization.
A video of Khloé organizing her cookie jars from a few years ago is making the rounds again. In it, she calls OCD “a blessing.”
According to Khloé, being “OCD” is good, because it means she’s organized and clean. The video may be a few years old, but she continues to refer to OCD in a positive way.
In fact, for Khloé, general cleanliness is OCD. She recently asked her fans if they’re “Khlo-C-D ” or “messy AF?”
Her continued insensitivity and joking about a serious disorder is not a good look. She clearly knows that OCD is a medical condition, because in her now-infamous quote she says: “You say OCD is a disease, but I say it’s a blessing.” If she knows it’s a serious issue, why is she still joking about it?
Fans were not happy with Khloé Kardashian’s statement about OCD
Twitter fans are notorious for their ability to criticize almost everything. Naturally, fans are upset about Khloé’s lighthearted comments regarding OCD. Some fans took to Twitter to call out the reality TV star.
As one user put it: “that video of Khloe kardashian calling OCD a blessing when she’s talking about arranging cookies while you’ve been diagnosed with OCD and it’s literally the worst part of your life.”
Another user wrote that Khloé is “uneducated” and “insensitive” to believe that a debilitating condition could ever be considered a blessing. In fact, they don’t think that Khloé should be joking about having OCD just because she likes things organized.
Everyone experiences OCD differently, and it can be debilitating
OCD is defined by the National Institute of Mental Health as “a common, chronic, and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and/or behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over.”
In order to meet the clinical definition of OCD, a patient’s behaviors or thoughts must disrupt their life. It’s not enough to have the obsessive behavior. Professionals only consider something a mental health condition if it impacts a person’s life negatively.
Also, OCD isn’t always about cleanliness. Many times, people with OCD experience intrusive thoughts or exhibit behaviors that have nothing to do with being neat or clean.
Symptoms of OCD can include unwanted thoughts that are taboo, like thoughts about harming people or one’s self. It can also include obsessive checking, like making sure the oven is off over and over. It’s important for Khloe’s fans to know that OCD affects everyone differently.
