Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall parted with her character Samantha Jones after the second film was released in 2010. The actor refused to appear in a third movie for several reasons. But she recently revealed that one of the reasons she turned it down was a storyline written for Samantha and Miranda’s son, Brady.

Kim Cattrall felt the ‘Sex and the City 3’ story for Samantha wasn’t right

Sex and the City 3 was in the works following the second movie. But in 2017, the film was officially scrapped, partly because Cattrall refused to return as Samantha

The actor portrayed the smart and unapologetically bold character for 12 years. And in a recent interview with Variety, she revealed that she was not happy with the direction writers were taking her story.

Cattrall confirmed that the script included a storyline in which Miranda Hobb’s young son sends Samantha inappropriate pictures of himself. She called the idea “heartbreaking,” and suggested Samantha could have tackled more pressing conflicts.

“Why can’t Samantha, who owns her PR company — maybe she had to sell it because of financial woes?” Cattrall said. “She had to sell it to some guy who’s wearing a hoodie, and that’s the dilemma she has. I mean that’s a scenario that was kind of off the top of one of my reps’ heads, and I thought that’s a great idea. That’s a conflict. Instead of an underage boy’s …”

“I would have preferred for all of us to have some kind of event to warrant a third film,” she added. “That didn’t happen.”

‘Sex and the City 3’ is ‘And Just Like That’ Kim Cattrall says

While Sex and the City 3 never happened, the franchise did get a reboot with the new series, And Just Like That. Cattrall did not return for this project either. But she admits that after parting ways with the show, she wasn’t invited back.

“I was never asked to be part of the reboot,” the How I Met Your Father star told Variety. “I made my feelings clear after the possible third movie, so I found out about it like everyone else did — on social media.”

Cattrall also revealed that the Mr. Big death storyline in And Just Like That was originally written for Sex and the City 3. “The series is basically the third movie,” she said. “That’s how creative it was.”

Kim Cattrall doesn’t want to play Samantha Jones anymore

Sex and the City always centered on a circle of four friends — Samantha Jones, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Charlotte York (Kristin Davis), and Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon). So Cattrall’s absence from And Just Like That made the reboot feel incomplete.

Cattrall knows and appreciates how much fans want to see her return as Samantha. But now, busy with new projects like Queer as Folk and How I Met Your Father, she isn’t interested in going backward.

“Can you imagine going back to a job you did 25 years ago?” Cattrall said in her chat with Variety. “And the job didn’t get easier; it got more complicated in the sense of how are you going to progress with these characters?”

The actor continued, “Everything has to grow, or it dies. I felt that when the series ended, I thought that’s smart. We’re not repeating ourselves.”
