Kim Cattrall Signs Onto ‘How I Met Your Father’ Weeks Before the Release of the ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot
Kim Cattrall’s recent show, Filthy Rich, was a bit of a failure, but she isn’t about to give up acting, even as she opts out of joining her former castmates for a reboot of the show that made her a household name. While Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis gear up for the premiere of And Just Like That…, the Sex and the City reboot, Cattrall has signed onto a new show. She will appear in How I Met Your Father, the spinoff series of How I Met Your Mother.
Kim Cattrall has opted out of returning for the ‘Sex and the City’ reboot
Sex and the City fans were thrilled to find out their favorite pals would be returning to the small-screen in a reboot. The announcement, made in January 2021, was met with much excitement. That excitement was dulled a bit when Cattrall opted not to reprise Samantha Jones.
Several insiders have insisted the series, sans Samantha Jones, will be just as good. Candace Bushnell, the writer whose columns inspired Sex and the City, made it clear that she doesn’t care one bit that And Just Like That… won’t include the character. Cattrall has also been outspoken about her distaste for her time on the original series.
Kim Cattrall has officially signed on to appear in ‘How I Met Your Father’
Cattrall might not want to return to New York as Samantha, but she hasn’t written the city off completely. In fact, she’ll return to the streets of New York in a completely different role. According to Deadline, Cattrall has agreed to a recurring role on How I Met Your Father, which will also take place in New York City.
According to the publication, Cattrall will be playing the older version of Hilary Duff’s character, Sophie. Things are moving quickly on the series, too. Announced in April 2021, fans have already learned a fair bit about the series. In the show, Cattrall will be retelling how her character, Sophie, met her children’s father. Cattrall will be playing the same type of role that Bob Saget played in How I Met Your Mother.
When will ‘How I Met Your Father’ premiere?
Hulu intended for How I Met Your Father, a 10-episode limited series, to begin filming in August 2021. The quick turnaround had fans assuming they’d see the series hit Hulu sometime in 2021. A scheduling conflict changed all that, though. According to Deadline, filming dates have been shifted forward, and Hulu has not announced a definite premiere date just yet.
It’s safe to assume that the spinoff won’t be available for viewing until 2022. Whether that will be early in the year or later in the calendar is anyone’s guess. While Kim Cattrall is working on How I Met Your Father, her former castmates will be enjoying their show’s premiere. HBO Max will release And Just Like That… in December 2021.
