King Charlescancer battle continues as the new year ends and 2025 begins. What will the new year look like for the monarch as he continues treatment while balancing his duties to the United Kingdom?

What will 2025 bring for King Charles?

The BBC reports King Charles is expected to return to a “normal” schedule in 2025. This comes on the heels of a cancer diagnosis in early 2024 that sidelined the monarch from many front-facing appearances for the better part of the year.

Palace officials told the outlet that in particular, Charles’ visits to Australia and Samoa in October 2024 proved to be a “perfect tonic.” Charles’ success on that trip was encouraging to palace officials, who are reportedly booking even more overseas visits in the new year.

A palace aide said, “We’re now working on a pretty normal looking, full overseas tour program for next year, which is a high for us to end on.” Of course, any further overseas visits must be approved by the king’s team of doctors, who have closely monitored his health since Charles announced he had cancer in February 2024.

Charles loved going overseas and is looking forward to more trips abroad

Throughout 2024, King Charles significantly cut back on his workload. This was due to continued treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.

The 76-year-old monarch is reportedly still receiving treatment. It has not been shared by the palace when this medical intervention will conclude.

However, Charles was said to have been encouraged by his Australia trip. He looks forward to more trips abroad in 2025.

CNN quoted a palace official who said, “[Charles] has genuinely loved this tour. He has genuinely thrived on the program. It’s lifted his spirits, his mood, and his recovery. In that sense, the tour, despite its demands, has been the perfect tonic,” said the palace official.

“It is hard to overstate the joy that he takes from duty and service and being in public and seeing those crowds engaging with communities across the spectrum. That does lift the spirits. You can see that,” the official concluded.

On Jan. 17, 2024, Buckingham Palace announced King Charles was receiving treatment for an enlarged prostate. One week later, Charles was admitted to the hospital for surgery and was released after three days.

On Feb. 5, the palace announced Charles had cancer. “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the Palace said in a statement.

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.”

The king didn’t undertake a forward-facing event until Easter when he greeted well-wishers after leaving services at Windsor Castle. However, it wasn’t until April 30 that the king faced the public in an official capacity at University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre.

In June, Charles attended Trooping the Color and in August, undertook an overseas trip to Australia and Samoa. Prince William stood in for his father at the commemorations of the D-Day landings in June. In December, William represented the monarchy at the opening of the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
