King Charles is reportedly fearful to further “stir things up” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. A royal author claims the king is showing restraint and that for Charles, it is a “huge effort to do nothing.”

A royal author cites King Charles’ restraint when it comes to Prince Harry, Meghan Markle

Since departing their roles as senior royals in March 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stirred the proverbial Windsor pot. For the first three years after their exit, they spoke out against family members on video and in print.

King Charles, on the other hand, remained silent when it came to his youngest son. Royal author Robert Hardman states it shows the monarch’s huge restraint not to retaliate against some of Harry’s claims.

In an essay for The Daily Mail, Hardman spoke to King Charles’ staff members about his ability to remain silent when Harry said Charles was emotionless upon revealing his mother, Princess Diana, had died, as well as the “barriers” between them as Charles was an older father when Diana gave birth.

“He always had an iron discipline about not stirring things up with the Sussexes,” says a former member of Charles’ staff to Hardman “It can take a huge effort to do nothing when you’re being criticized.”

Where does Prince Harry and King Charles’ relationship stand today?

According to all reports, Prince Harry and King Charles’ relationship remains strained. Father and son are reportedly not in regular communication with each other.

Harry and Charles’ last face-to-face meeting was in February when the news of King Charles’ cancer diagnosis broke. Harry flew to England to meet with his father for less than one hour upon learning the news of his health struggles.

According to The Telegraph, Charles is reportedly fearful of speaking to Harry until he drops his court case against the British government. This is allegedly in case Charles becomes part of the court case.

Harry continues to fight the U.K. government over a decision to remove security detail for him, his wife Meghan Markle, and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, after their move to the United States.

For The Daily Mail, Robert Hardman quoted a legal advisor who shared their thoughts about what would happen if Harry and Charles did communicate at this time. “So imagine the situation. If the Prince were to talk to his father about his court case and then later describe that conversation or, worse, a conversation that was not entirely accurate. There would be serious legal jeopardy.”

Therefore, the court case could be one of the key reasons keeping Charles and Harry apart. Perhaps when the legal issues between Harry and the government are settled, father and son can repair their relationship.

When, if ever, will Harry and Charles repair their relationship?

In the future, there is always hope for a future reconciliation between King Charles and Prince Harry. However at this point in time, Charles and Harry are reportedly not speaking.

Charles is reportedly quite involved in the lives of his son, Prince William’s children; Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis. George was even a page at his grandfather’s coronation in May 2023.

However, Charles remains separated from Princess Lilibet and Prince Louis, who live in California with their parents, Harry and Meghan Markle. They are closer to Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, who lives nearby.

Charles is nearing 80, and to have an estrangement from his youngest son, particularly during his most recent health crisis, has likely been difficult to personally navigate. However, the stress Harry has placed on the royal family cannot go unnoticed.

So while Charles may be willing to forgive, others in the innermost royal circle may not. There are still repairs to be made to Harry’s relationships with Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince William, and Kate Middleton. When and if that will ever take place remains to be seen.
