Prince Harry and King Charles’ relationship has suffered quite a bit since Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, stepped back from their roles as senior royals in 2020. The king and his son do still speak, but things have remained rocky.

Still, despite not getting along so well, Charles made a public effort to acknowledge Harry’s 40th birthday in mid-September, and now, experts say the king is leaving the door “open” for a potential reconciliation with his son.

King Charles’ door is ‘open’ if Prince Harry wants to fix things

Charles and Harry were hardly speaking back in 2021 when Harry sat down for his first interview — alongside Meghan and hosted by Oprah Winfrey — since leaving the royal family the year prior. Harry’s relationship with his father has improved since then, but things are far from perfect. In early 2024, Harry made his way to the United Kingdom after learning of Charles’ cancer diagnosis, but he reportedly only met with his father for 45 minutes.

But after the public happy birthday, sources close to the king say that his door has been left “open” should Harry want to get together. And Harry is planning on returning to the UK shortly, though there is no indication that he and Charles will meet. Still, one expert believes that Harry’s frequent UK trips are a “good sign.”

“Well, he does seem to be coming quite often, doesn’t he? Which in some ways is a good sign, I think,” royal historian Hugo Vickers told The Sun.

Vickers continued, “If he keeps coming at least there is a chance at some stage he’ll meet up with his father, and you know, maybe this can be a step towards some sort of reconciliation … The king certainly leaves the door open for him.”

Prince Harry and King Charles might eventually meet up

Although nothing is set in stone, Vickers’ hope is that the more time Harry spends in the UK, the more he’ll want to work his way back into the royal family. And although it might take a while, it does seem like Charles would always be willing to let Harry back in.

“I think there’s quite a long way to go, but it’s nice that he feels he can come here anyway,” Vickers said of Harry’s decision to visit the UK more often. Prior to 2024, Harry hardly returned to the UK unless it was for a court appearance, though he did make a handful of royal appearances including twice in 2022 and the king’s coronation in 2023. Overall, it looks like the UK is still an important part of Harry’s life even if it takes much longer for the royals and the Duke of Sussex to work things out.
