Kirsten Dunst Accidentally Got So Stoned on Set She Was Sent Home
Drugs have become widely used in both film and television. Actors often portray characters that frequently use illicit substances in their scenes.
Prop masters have the difficult task of replicating the drug to make it appear that the actor is using the real thing. It usually works out well, and the viewer is none the wiser.
Kirsten Dunst had a mishap while filming Woodshock and got so stoned that she couldn’t properly function. Once producers realized what was going on, they sent her home.
Kirsten Dunst has a long resume of film and television credits
The 38-year-old actress lit up the screen 20 years ago as a competitive high school cheerleader in Bring It On. She is best known for playing Mary Jane in the Spider-Man trilogy, starring alongside Tobey Maguire.
Involved in the entertainment industry since the age of three, Dunst has a long resume of film and television credits, including Jumanji, Little Women, and Marie Antoinette.
Her most recent work was in 2019 on the Showtime series On Becoming a God in Central Florida, as well as doing voiceover work for Hank the Cowdog.
A history of substance abuse
Dunst is candid about her history of drug abuse. Her fans have been a source of support after her stay in a drug rehabilitation center in 2008. Now sober, the actress admits to becoming addicted to prescription antidepressants after breaking up with her then-boyfriend, Johnny Borrell.
Spiraling out of control, she started using ecstasy and other hardcore drugs according to LOLWOT. Her family convinced her to check into rehab and get some help.
The Interview With a Vampire star has had a long battle with alcohol and substance abuse. In 2007, in an MTV News interview, she confessed,
“I drink moderately, I’ve tried drugs. I do like weed. I have a different outlook on marijuana than America does. If everyone smoked weed, the world would be a better place.”
A mistake while filming ‘Woodshock’
Kirsten Dunst starred in the psychological thriller Woodshock that tells the story of a woman who copes with the loss of her mother by smoking marijuana laced with a powerful hallucinogenic. The result is a trippy pot-smoking film that would make Seth Rogen proud.
During filming in 2017, crew members inadvertently gave Dunst a real joint to smoke during a scene where her character, Theresa, is getting high.
Unaware of the mix-up, she became violently ill, telling Jimmy Kimmel in an interview, “I went to the bathroom. I’m pacing. I’m shaking. I’m hot. I’m just flipping out.” Dunst told the director, “There’s seriously something up. I feel like I’m losing my mind!”
The Hidden Figures actress explained to Kimmel that “movie pot,” which consists of rolled tobacco or fake herbs, is typically used on set. One of the producers discovered that she had smoked a “full blunt on one of the takes.” She went on to explain, “We’re talking about Humboldt weed. I don’t smoke full joints, and this is like strong sh*t.”
When Kimmel asked her how that happened, she said, “They had locals roll the joints for us, and they just threw some in for fun.”
Dunst told Kimmel, “I was crying, laughing, eating a peanut butter sandwich. I couldn’t film anymore. They sent me home! I was a total mess!”
Despite her real-life experiences with drug use, she told Kimmel, “I’ve never been that stoned in my entire life!”
