Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke on Filming Romantic Scenes for ‘Game of Thrones’
Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke are known for their incomparable chemistry as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones. When these two get hot and heavy, viewers in living rooms across the nation can feel the steam coming off of the screen. Acting opposite one another with such a degree of romantic conviction has led many to believe that the co-stars are romantic in real life.
While their sexual chemistry may be palpable, to say the least, in real life, their relationship is as platonic as it gets. Both Harington and Emilia Clarke have denied any allegations concerning a sexual relationship, and have explained more than once (in interviews and across social media platforms) that they are no more than friends.
Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington share a similar journey to fame. Both graduated drama school and were quickly thrown into the limelight as the young leads on Game of Thrones. Not many others can identify with such shell-shock, and they reportedly have turned to one another for advice and guidance in the past. So, when it came to filming their first intimate scenes, the experience was…interesting.
Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke talk ‘Game of Thrones’ season seven: The start of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen’s romance
As viewers know, Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen eventually seal the deal in season seven. However, up until this point, the two actors behind the beloved characters had not shared much screen time. So, jumping into these scenes, having developed quite the friendship off-screen, made for a bit of an awkward, yet amusing experience.
Emilia Clarke told Variety, “The first scene we had together, we both just started laughing. Why are you looking at me this strange way and saying these strange lines? You’re my friend!” Kit Harington shared a similar experience according to Harper’s Bazaar, and told Esquire, “I remember our first scene together was bizarre. We kind of looked at each other and tried not to laugh.”
It’s no surprise that the two were holding back laughter, for Kit Harington has reported in the past that Clarke has quite the sense of humor – one that’s a bit filthy – and Clarke explained to Variety that Harington would pretend to throw-up in between cuts.
If you were hoping for a love at first sight-esque story, you came to the wrong place. For, just like they have said many times before, Jon Snow and Daenerys may be in love, but the love between Kit and Emilia is more sibling-like.
Will Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke forever be Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen?
Both Emilia Clarke and Kit Harington have taken on a few other characters outside of Game of Thrones.
Emilia Clarke has appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story, Terminator Genisys, Me Before You, and Thunderbirds Are Go. Clarke is also set to star in Above Suspicion and Last Christmas later this year. So, when it comes to breaking away from her iconic character, she seems determined to do just that (and prove to casting directors that she’s capable of more).
On the other hand, while Kit Harington recently voiced Eret in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, his turn in The Death and Life of John F. Donovan suffered from negative critical reviews, while many fans were disappointed with Gunpowder.
Kit Harington has no projects on the horizon and has been doing a lot of voice work (including on video games), which leads many to wonder if he’s struggling to gain on-screen work that will separate him from GoT. However, our hopes remain high for the talented Harington following the GoT finale.
