Without being crude, the final book of the Twilight series had some pretty long-awaited scenes in it. They weren’t really detailed in the book, but Bella Swan had been waiting quite a bit to have some alone time with Edward. And after getting married, no less.

Regardless, fans finally got some sex scenes in the Twilight movies, and of course that means that someone had to film them. And according to Robert Pattinson, there was a bit of silliness involved in the process.

Filming ‘Twilight’ sex scenes was a ‘surreal’ moment for Kristen Stewart

Kristen Stewart Was the Reason the ‘Twilight: Breaking Dawn’ Sex Scenes Had To Be Reshot

After the MPAA originally gave The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1 an R-rating, they had to rework some scenes, according to People. And that must have been a little bit of maneuvering because according to Kristen Stewart, the sex scenes were some of the first things shot.

“There are two big sex scenes in the two [final] films, and we did them fairly early,” Stewart told Glamour UK.

And even though the first three films are wrought with sexual tension — first with just Pattinson’s Edward Cullen, and then Taylor Lautner’s Jacob Black — there isn’t a sex scene. So for Stewart, she also shared how filming something like that was so odd.

“It was so weird, it didn’t even feel like we were doing a scene within a Twilight film,” Stewart said. “I was like, ‘Bella! What are you doing? Wow! What is happening here?!’ It was very surreal.”

Robert Pattinson said he and Stewart laughed through filming those intimate scenes

Pattinson also opened up a little bit about how the sex scene in Breaking Dawn — Part 2 was a bit more demanding because Bella was a vampire.

“The sex is a lot wilder and more intense but I think it works better,” he said, according to Marie Claire UK in 2011.

He also said that, in order to keep it PG-13, they worked a lot with closeups on his and Stewart’s faces.

“We wanted to do something different, we had to figure ways to make it sexy even though it’s supposed to be 12A,” he said, referring to the UK’s rating system. 12A are for audiences 12 and under. “The idea was for us to have the greatest vampire sex ever.”

Of course, that can get a bit unpleasant or uncomfortable to do with cameras right in your face, considering it’s a lot of shots of their faces in these intimate scenes.

“‘It’s awkward doing close-ups in front of a big crew with the camera operator in your face and you’re supposed to show ultimate ecstasy,” Pattinson said. “Kristen and I would start to laugh and the cameraman was laughing, too.”

Bella and Edward have some pretty famous sex moments, breaking beds and pillows

Going into Breaking Dawn, the films, Bella and Edward’s sex life was already pretty famous. Again, it was nonexistent before the final book, but they did not waste time in making up for it.

The two took a pit stop in Rio de Janeiro and then took a speed boat to Isle Esme, a tiny island off the coast of the city, that was a gift from Carlisle to Esme. Because of course it was.

Once there, after the first night, Edward broke a bed and many pillows, and Bella remembered that it looked like several chicken ran through their bedroom. Edward did, unfortunately, leave bruises on Bella, which led him to a big brooding trip for a few days. But then she convinced him to get over it. That is, until she realized she was pregnant. The second half of the book is a little more consumed with Bella being a mother, a vampire, and their impending doom with the Volturi, but there’s a bit more in there too.
