What Was Kurt Cobain’s Net Worth at the Time of His Death?
Kurt Cobain is best known as the lead singer of the rock band Nirvana. Here’s a look at Kurt Cobain’s net worth, life, and career.
How Kurt Cobain became famous
Cobain’s popularity rose after the release of his second album, Nevermind, in 1991. The album went platinum only two months after it was released. This was no small feat considering the album had a modest debut at No. 144 on the Billboard charts. Nirvana was seen as the catalyst behind what became known as grunge. Before Nevermind, Nirvana released their debut studio album, Bleach, in 1989. Their final studio album, In Utero, was released in 1993.
Kurt Cobain’s death
Cobain died on April 5, 1994, due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was just 27 years old. Before Cobain’s suicide, he checked out of a drug rehabilitation program and was reported to be suicidal by Courtney Love, his wife of two years.
In an interview with MTV, Cobain spoke about his struggle with chronic stomach pain. The musician said he was in so much pain for six years that he wanted to die at one point.
I was in pain for so long that I didn’t care if I was in a band and I didn’t care if I was alive. It just so happened that I came to that conclusion when my band became really popular. It had been going on and building up for so many years that I was suicidal. I just didn’t want to live. I just thought, if I’m gonna die, if I’m gonna kill myself, I should take some drugs. I might as well become a junkie, because I felt like a junkie every day, waking up starving, forcing myself to eat, barfing it back up. Just imagine trying to eat your three meals a day, and just concentrating and just crying at times. I’m in pain all the time. Being on tour made it worse.
In Cobain’s suicide note, he said he lost his passion for music as well as his zest for life and trust in people.
I haven’t felt the excitement of listening to as well as creating music along with reading and writing for too many years now. I feel guilty beyond words about these things…
I have it good, very good, and I’m grateful, but since the age of seven, I’ve become hateful towards all humans in general. Only because it seems so easy for people to get along that have empathy. Only because I love and feel sorry for people too much I guess.
Thank you all from the pit of my burning, nauseous stomach for your letters and concern during the past years. I’m too much of an erratic, moody baby! I don’t have the passion anymore, and so remember, it’s better to burn out than to fade away.
Even after Cobain’s death, he continued to receive accolades. In 2014, Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
