‘KUWTK’: Have the Kardashian-Jenners Taught Themselves to Speak Differently?
People all over the world have been fascinated by the Kardashian-Jenners since they first rose to fame in the 2000s. Every action of theirs constantly gets scrutinized by fans and the media, including the way that they speak.
One thing in particular that has gotten a lot of attention over the years is their speech patterns. In fact, some fans are now believing that the Kardashian-Jenners might have purposely trained themselves to speak differently.
The Kardashian-Jenners have become famous for the way they speak
Anyone who has seen Keeping Up With the Kardashians is familiar with the way that the sisters of the Kardashian-Jenner family speak. They are known for their “Valley girl” accent, which is distinguishable by its use of uptalk (rising intonation in sentences that are not questions) as well as vocal fry (a creaky, low voice in certain words).
The “Valley girl” accent has been around for decades, but the Kardashian-Jenners’ popularity really brought it back into the mainstream.
While linguists do not think there is anything wrong with uptalk and vocal fry, a number of people do not take the “Valley girl” speech seriously. Women who speak like the Kardashian-Jenners tend to be viewed as less intelligent.
Fans think that the Kardashian-Jenners purposely changed their speaking style
The Kardashian-Jenner women still have the general “Valley girl” accent, but many fans notice that some parts of their speech patterns have changed over the years.
“Has anyone noticed that since the start of the series, Kris has changed the way she speaks?” one fan on Reddit said. “She over pronounced every, single, syllable. It drives me crazy because I think maybe she’s had some coaching or something to do this. None of the other family members talk this way. It’s not a Cali accent, it’s like something totally different that I cannot pinpoint.”
The same poster also pointed out the changes in Khloe Kardashian and Kim Kardashian West’s speech as well, noting that Khloe “pronounces every -ing suffix as “-ung” while Kim is “very calculated and monotone and doesn’t use her top lip or teeth.”
Other fans also agreed that the way that some Kardashian-Jenner speaks is not very natural and must have been the product of serious coaching.
Some believe that cosmetic surgery influences the Kardashian-Jenners’ speech
While it is probable that the Kardashian-Jenners would purposely change their speech, some people believe that it could simply be cosmetic surgery that is affecting how they talk.
“The girls are probably trying to avoid activating their nasolabial folds (laugh lines) by not using their upper lips,” one person on Reddit said.
Another fan agreed, sharing: “I always assumed they couldn’t use their upper lips because of Botox. I had some dental work done last year that caused my upper lip to be numb for half a day and I felt like Kim when I was trying to talk.”
Some fans think that Kim Kardashian West could be taken more seriously now
Unlike her family members, Kim Kardashian West has shared the fact that she has ambitions beyond being a reality star and social media influencer. She is currently studying law in hopes of being able to take the bar exam in a few years. Kardashian West has even said that she would like to eventually take a step back from fame and focus entirely on her law career.
Last year, many fans pointed out on another Reddit thread that Kim actually sounds more “eloquent” now. It’s not clear if this was intentional on her part or not, but her supporters believe that she did go through some speech training, especially since being a lawyer involves a lot of public speaking. As such, Kim Kardashian West seems determined to be taken more seriously by other people.
