The rich and famous seem to have it all. Fans of the Kardashian Jenner clan are used to seeing photos of them prancing around Calabasas. Occasionally there will be a security guard in the frame. Although the sisters brag about a lot, they rarely show off their impressive security team.

When a guard does happen to wander into a shot, it’s a stark reminder that with all the money and fame comes an unimaginable danger. Kim Kardashian knows that better than anyone. Being famous almost cost her life.

Kim Kardashian’s experience in Paris was harrowing

In 2016, Kim was the victim of an armed robbery in a Paris hotel room. The criminals broke into her room, bound and gagged her, and stole jewelry. Although the act itself can be described in one sentence, the effects on Kim and her family were endless. Kim feared for her life, and rightfully so. Eventually 17 people were arrested by French authorities, and at least one of them had been working with the Kardashians directly, as a chauffeur.

In the wake of the incident, Kim stepped up her security. Her family did the same, and it’s a good thing they did. Her sisters Kylie and Kendall Jenner would later have a stalker who tried to gain access them on at least one occasion. The experience gave Kim PTSD. It would have changed anyone, and it certainly changed Kim. Fans on reddit recently wondered what Kim’s life would be like if that had never happened.

Kim Kardashian’s life was changed by the events in Paris

According to fans, the Paris robbery seems to be a watershed moment for Kim. They believe it changed everything, from her fashion sense to her career trajectory. Kim is studying to be a lawyer, and advocating prison reform. Some fans think that the change in career path is related to the robbery in some way. As one fan wrote, “I wonder what Kim’s style and fame trajectory would be like if she hadn’t been robbed. She was knocked off course. She stopped being as showy for a while and wore more athletic/low key styles. She’s rebranding as a lawyer & chosen to work on prison reform as a platform.”

If Kim hadn’t been humbled by the experience, would she be as relatable as she is today? Some fans don’t think so. They think that the experience changed Kim, and maybe for the better. Kim suffered, and still does, because of the events of that night. But she’s also grown from it. That’s not the only thing that may have changed Kim, however.

After her Paris robbery, Kim Kardashian dealt with Kanye West’s mental health crisis

Just one short month after her horrific Paris experience, Kim Kardashian rushed to her husband Kanye West’s side. In November 2016, he was hospitalized for a psychiatric emergency. Kim had a lot to process during that time. Fans point out that she stopped dressing up all the time, but it may not be because of the robbery. Dealing with a mental health crisis is exhausting, not only for the patient but also for his or her family. Kim may have changed her street style because she no longer had the energy to leave the house dressed to the nines to run errands.

Sources close to West cited Kim’s robbery as one of the reasons for the rapper’s declining mental health, although not nearly the only one. After the 2016 mental health incident, Kanye seemed to withdraw from his life in California, spending more and more time in Wyoming. The changes in Kanye after that first incident may have been the beginning of the end for Kim and Kanye’s relationship. The two are now in the middle of a divorce. Kim’s robbery may have, therefore, changed the course of her marriage, as well as her life.
