Kylie Jenner Gained Over 41 Million Instagram Followers in a Year; Is She Fudging the Numbers?
Love her or hate her, you cannot deny that Kylie Jenner has an incredible platform and fan base. On Instagram alone, the 22-year-old boasts an astronomical 179 million followers, making her the fourth most followed person on the platform behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Ariana Grande, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson respectively. But, just how did Jenner manage to grow her following to such an enormous level?
Thanks to her famous family, Jenner has always been in the spotlight. Caitlyn Jenner was a famous athlete and became well-known for her Olympic achievements. On the other hand, Kris Jenner rose to fame because of her relationship with her late ex-husband, Robert Kardashian. Furthermore, Jenner’s siblings made a name for themselves in the entertainment industry. Their show, Keeping Up with the Kardashians, has become one of the most successful reality shows and Jenner has made appearances since she was a young child.
How Kylie Jenner gained her massive Instagram following
For years, Jenner was known simply as Kim Kardashian West’s little sister. But, Jenner began to make a name for herself when she joined popular social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. Steadily, Jenner’s followers climbed because she was sharing details from her lavish lifestyle on the popular platform. But, when Jenner started her own brand and started selling Kylie Lip Kits, which would eventually become Kylie Cosmetics, her fame exploded.
Jenner began selling lip-kits in her teens (which featured one lip gloss and one lip liner) and through them she began accruing staggering wealth. Like her elder sister, Jenner had the foresight to use Instagram and Twitter as marketing tools for her brand. She is often credited for the trend of people who choose to overline their lips to make them look bigger. Despite Jenner admitting to using lip fillers, many of her fans believed that they could achieve her looks by using her products.
Fans are obsessed with Jenner’s net worth and daughter
As Jenner’s net worth climbed, so too did her following. Fans were interested in the details of her lavish lifestyle. Furthermore, Jenner had high-profile relationships with rappers Tyga and Travis Scott that helped to expose her to different audiences. When Jenner got pregnant with her now two-year-old daughter, Stormi Webster, (whom she shares with Scott) her following exploded once more. Suddenly, people were interested to see how she was navigating motherhood, especially since she is so young.
But, Jenner’s following has grown substantially in the past year alone. She even managed to overtake Kardashian West as the most followed Kardashian/Jenner. To date, Jenner has nearly 6 million more followers than the KKW Fragrance founder. She also manage to pass Selena Gomez in terms of followers just a few days ago. This is no small feat as Gomez was once the most followed person on the platform.
The ‘KUWTK’ grew her following by 41 million in under a year
In fact, Jenner’s Instagram following has managed to grow a whopping 41.1 million in just under a year. On June 14, 2019, we reported that the 22-year-old had 137.9 followers. Today, June 1, 2020, Jenner boasts 179 million. Though that kind of growth isn’t unheard of for a celebrity, it certainly is out of the ordinary. As Forbes recently announced that Jenner and her mother, Kris Jenner, faked her billionaire status fans are questioning if she’s faking other metrics in her life also.
Are some of Jenner’s Instagram followers fake?
The KarJenners, but especially Kardashian West, have been accused of having fake Instagram followers before. Fans and critics alike have noted that the reality TV stars have loads of followers with seemingly fake usernames and accounts. Furthermore, their growth seems to be more exponential than that of other celebrities. But, as all this is speculative, it’s hard to say whether there’s any truth to it. Unless Instagram comes out and accusees Jenner of fake followers, the validity of the rumors will always be contested. We can only hope that Jenner uses her massive platform to speak out about things that really matter.
