Kylie Jenner Said This Heartbreaking Experience Was the Real Reason She Got Lip Fillers
Kylie Jenner is famous for a lot of things. Born into one of the world’s most famous families (The Kardashian-Jenner clan), she was thrust into the spotlight at a young age. As the youngest in the family, Kylie Jenner is the richest–but also one of the most scrutinized members. Critics and fans have commented on how Jenner’s appearance has changed drastically over the years, with some accusing her of getting plastic surgery. A few years ago, Jenner opened up and admitted to getting lip fillers. But what was the real reason she decided to get the procedure?
Rise and shine, teenage boys are the worst
Jenner admitted the reason she wanted lip fillers on her show Life of Kylie in 2015. It has to do with two of the most common themes in adolescence: feeling awkward about how you look, and completely overthinking something your crush said to you.
“I was 15 and I was insecure about my lips,” she admitted. “I have really small lips.” But the idea didn’t stem from her self-esteem issues alone.
“It was one of my first kisses, and a guy was like, ‘I didn’t think you would be a good kisser because you have such small lips,'” she explained. “I took that really hard. When a guy you like says that, I don’t know, it just really affected me.” Jenner seemed to internalize the comment, and unfortunately, it affected the way she saw herself.
“I just didn’t feel desirable or pretty,” she said. While she found interim solutions, eventually she decided to go for the filler.
Kylie Jenner admitted that it wasn’t just makeup, it was lip fillers
“I would over-line my lips with the lip liner to create the illusion of bigger lips and then, finally, I was like, this lip liner isn’t doing it and ended up getting my lips done,” Jenner confessed.
Apparently, Jenner’s insecurity-fueled-filler confession was inspirational; The Independent U.K. reported that her confession spiked interest in lip enhancements. (One clinic reported a 70% increase in a 24-hour period).
Despite many accusations claiming otherwise, Kylie Jenner has continuously denied undergoing actual surgery for cosmetic purposes.
“I haven’t had plastic surgery. I’ve never been under the knife,” Jenner maintained in 2015.
Kylie Jenner, living in the age of Instagram Face
Writer Jia Tolentino recently wrote about the concept of “Instagram Face” in the New Yorker. Instagram Face is the “single, cyborgian face” we see plastered across Instagram by influencers and models.
“It’s a young face, of course, with poreless skin and plump, high cheekbones … [with] catlike eyes and long, cartoonish lashes; it has a small, neat nose and full, lush lips,” Tolentino writes. Who embodies this face perfectly? The Kardashians, of course.
Celebrity makeup artist Colby Smith described Jenner’s sister, Kim Kardashian West, as “’patient zero’ for Instagram Face.”
And this has all made plastic surgery way more popular. Plastic surgeon Jason Diamond, who appeared on the reality show Dr. 90210, agreed.
“I’d say that thirty percent of people come in bringing a photo of Kim, or someone like Kim,” Diamond told Tolentino. “There’s a handful of people, but she’s at the very top of the list.”
The cosmetic surgeon gets a lot of new clients based off of Instagram testimonials from celebrities.
“All of a sudden, it’s popular knowledge that all these people are coming here,” Diamond said. “For some reason, Instagram made it more acceptable.”
However you want to deal with weird things immature boys said to you when you were 15, we salute you.
