Before collaborating on their hit song, “Rain On Me,” Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande crossed paths on numerous occasions, whether it be at awards ceremonies or other A-list events. Though the singers had many opportunities to forge a friendship, they just recently became besties partly due to Lady Gaga initially being “too ashamed” to bond with the young pop star.

Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande collaborated on a song earlier this year

In May of 2020, Gaga and Grande brought their vocals together when they delivered their highly anticipated song and music video for “Rain On Me,” which is their first duet together to date.

The track was nothing short of amazing and failed to disappoint as fans couldn’t get enough of the song’s powerful message and cheerful melody.

And because the song immediately resonated with listeners, it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Gaga’s fifth and Grande’s fourth US number-one single as well as the first female collaboration to debut atop the chart.

The singers bonded during the recording process

While Gaga and Grande’s chemistry was evident in their “Rain on Me” music video, they showed fans just how well they get on in real life during a behind-the-scenes video of their dance rehearsals posted to Gaga’s Instagram.

As they practiced the choreography for their music video, the “Star Is Born” actor accidentally scratched the “7 Rings” singer right near her eye. Though Gaga was instantly filled with concern after claiming she “shanked” Grande with her nail, Ari, on the other hand, admired the deep scratch and said, “It’s an honor. I hope it stays there forever.”

When the “Bad Romance” singer tried to assess Grande’s new favorite wound, the Nickelodeon alum made an effort to get away. This, in turn, caused Gaga to playfully tackle Grande to the ground so she could apply scar cream to her scratch.

But the “Positions” crooner refused and attempted to squirm out of Gaga’s grasp while shouting, “No! Not the Neosporin! No, no, no… I want it to stay!”

As the pop divas’ playful altercation continued, fans could clearly see a beautiful friendship blossoming between the two.

Following the song’s release, Lady Gaga revealed why it took so long for her and Grande to become friends

After dropping their highly-anticipated collaboration, Gaga did an interview with Zane Lowe for Apple Music’s Beats 1, where she opened up about her friendship with Grande.

Though the singers had instantly hit it off while collaborating on “Rain On Me,” getting the two to forge a true friendship took a lot of work on Grande’s part.

During the interview, Gaga revealed that she was afraid to bond with Grande, simply because she thought she would negatively influence the young pop star.

“She was so persistent. She would try over and over again to be friends with me,” the Chromatica performer revealed. “And I was too ashamed to hang out with her, because I didn’t want to project all of this negativity onto something that was healing and so beautiful.”

But Grande isn’t one to give up and soon proved to Gaga that she could handle anything that comes her way.

“Eventually she called me on my s–t,” the singer added. “She was, ‘You’re hiding.’ And I was like, ‘I am hiding. I’m totally hiding.’ And then this friendship blossomed.”
