Lady Gaga’s House of Gucci isn’t in theaters yet. But somehow, the A Star is Born actor has already managed to make her character iconic. In the film’s trailer, she crosses herself and utters an unforgettable line. And as it happens, the line wasn’t in the script. Lady Gaga herself ad-libbed it.

The singer says director Ridley Scott ‘uses the creativity’ in the movie

In a red carpet interview at the Los Angeles premiere of House of Gucci, Gaga dished. When her character Patrizia crosses herself and says “Father, Son, and House of Gucci,” it was an ad-lib of her very own.

“I would do it in the trailer all the time,” she told Variety. “I was doing it in the trailer and then something about that scene when we were doing it felt right. We did it, and it’s a testament to Ridley Scott as a director because he uses the stuff. He uses the creativity. He uses the love.”

It was an intelligent move for Gaga to ad-lib the line. Furthermore, it was brilliant of Scott to keep it. The moment is already internet-famous. Meanwhile, House of Gucci doesn’t even hit theaters until November 24, 2021.

Gaga also told Variety that she felt playing Patrizia had its own challenges. The complex character is based on the real-life Patrizia Reggiana Gucci, who hired a hitman to kill her husband.

“The most challenging part was playing a murderer,” Gaga told the magazine. “But I will say that after a lot of research, I realized that she knows she made a big mistake. And it was a lot of trauma that drove her toward this huge mistake that I know she regrets. So when you go see House of Gucci, you will not watch a movie about some sexy, gold-digging murderess, you will watch a real woman fall in love and fall apart.”

The ‘House of Gucci’ screenwriter agreed that Lady Gaga’s ad-lib was brilliant

On the same House of Gucci red carpet, the movie’s writer Roberto Bentivegna told Variety that Gaga’s additional line was inspired.

“That was Gaga the ad-libber at work,” he confirmed. “It’s iconic. Amazing. There was so many great ad-libs that didn’t make the cut. That was certainly a great one.” Bentivegna continued, saying that it was “joyful.”

“They just had such a great time riffing,” he said. “I think that some writers might feel like their words are precious and everything has to be respected, but for me it was joyful. It was like they’re feeling it. It’s like music. It’s like they’re jamming and the melody is taking them to this awesome improvisation. I was very flattered that they felt like doing that.”

Gaga’s red carpet comments included her aspirations for audiences. For her part, she can’t wait for them to experience it.

“I can’t wait for people to go out into theaters and see this movie because it’s so fun,” she said. “So fun. And it looks like it’s going to be really dramatic. It is but it’s dramatic and funny and comedic.”

That sounds like a recipe for the perfect holiday movie. Judging by fans’ approval of her ad-libbed House of Gucci line, they’re going to love the full movie even more.
