Lady Gaga Is Rumored to Portray Amy Winehouse in Biopic Movie: Is It True?
Lady Gaga is past the edge of glory. The pop star always wanted to be an actor, and now she is. After starring in American Horror Story and A Star Is Born, the “Paparazzi” artist will appear in House of Gucci. But could she portray the late Amy Winehouse in an upcoming movie?
Once viewers found out there will be a Winehouse biopic, they quickly nominated Gaga. The devout “Little Monsters” could be correct. So is Gaga stepping into Winehouse’s shoes?

Aside from the stark resemblance, Gaga expresses her personal connection to the “Rehab” singer. In one Instagram post, Gaga wrote Winehouse “was the best.”
In Gaga’s documentary Five Foot Two, the pop star explains her thoughts behind her hit “Paparazzi” in one scene. The song is about how fame affects a person. Viewers noticed that Gaga was insinuating Winehouse. Not only that, but the scene includes bass player Nicholas Movshon, who worked with Winehouse on her Back to Black album.
“If I’m gonna be sexy on the VMAs and sing about the paparazzi, I’m going to do it while I’m bleeding to death,” Gaga revealed. “And reminding you of what fame did to Marilyn Monroe, the original Norma Jean, and what it did to Anna Nicole Smith, and what it did to…Yeah, you know who.”
Gaga’s “you know who” reference is assumed to be Winehouse.
Will Gaga portray Winehouse in the movie?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the CEO of Halcyon Studios confirmed an Amy Winehouse biopic based on Daphne Barak’s book, Saving Amy. “Our team is honored to be working on this project,” CEO David Ellender revealed. “Although her career was cut far too short, Amy was the voice of a generation, and we look forward to telling her story in the most poignant way possible.”
The studio did not outline a full plot synopsis.
Once Gaga fans heard the news, they nominated the pop singer to portray Winehouse. They noted Gaga’s resemblance, performance style, and personal admiration for the “Back to Black” singer.
However, Halcyon Studios did not confirm a cast. Gaga might not portray Winehouse, but there is a high chance; she solidified her acting potential through A Star Is Born and House of Gucci.
Fans already knew Gaga had strong vocals before they watched the Bradley Cooper remake. But Gaga plays a different role as Patrizia Reggiani. Her thick Italian accent and demeanor prove her range as an actor.
Amy Winehouse’s father says the movie won’t happen
Despite the hype surrounding the Winehouse project, it might not happen. Winehouse’s father and estate administrator, Mitch, explained why it is “100% not allowed” to TMZ.
According to Winehouse, the estate already planned a biopic. The only difference is that the Winehouse estate owns the rights to the movie. He claims Halcyon’s production does not. The approved biopic is reportedly set to begin filming in the United Kingdom.
Winehouse added that the studio did not contact him nor the record label Universal for authorization. “They can’t be that stupid,” he said. “Everyone knows proper licenses must be granted.”
Nevertheless, Barak confirmed she is involved with the film. Since she owns the book, she claimed she has “all the releases and legal agreements needed” and said, “This material is also all legally my property to sell.”
Gaga fans and moviegoers will have to wait and see which biopic hits the big screen.
