When you think of Lady Gaga, you either think of what an amazing performer she is, her role in American Horror Story, or your favorite song she sings.

What you don’t think of is the toil that performing takes on her body, especially while she is on tour. And if you weren’t aware that she has fibromyalgia, you had no way of knowing how much pain the Diamond Heart singer goes through just to put on a great show.

Ever since she was diagnosed in 2018, Lady Gaga has been more open about what she is going through. Her goal is to spread the word about fibromyalgia, so that individuals who are suffering, but don’t have the money to go through the multiple steps of diagnosis, have more information to go on.

In her effort to spread more knowledge, Lady Gaga recently shared on Instagram what her post-show routine looks like so that she can recover quickly and set out for the next show.

What is Fibromyalgia?

If you’re not familiar with the term, you aren’t alone. As more people are diagnosed, awareness of the disease spreads, but most people only know that it’s painful. And truthfully, we don’t actually know much more than that.

MedPage states: “Fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a common and chronic disorder characterized by widespread pain, diffuse tenderness, and other symptoms.”

To be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a patient must first be tested for a wide range of diseases and have them all ruled out.

In an interview with Vogue, Lady Gaga states: “I get so irritated with people who don’t believe fibromyalgia is real. For me, and I think for many others, it’s really a cyclone of anxiety, depression, PTSD, trauma, and panic disorder, all of which sends the nervous system into overdrive, and then you have nerve pain as a result. People need to be more compassionate.”

Has fibromyalgia affected Lady Gaga’s career?

According to CNN, Lady Gaga had to cancel her Joanne World Tour in 2018 because of severe pain. She was unable to perform because the pain was too much for her.

Lady Gaga apologized to her fans but stated that she needed to look after her own well being first. It took a lot of courage to do that, and most of her fans were understanding, especially after Lady Gaga came forward with her diagnosis.

What Lady Gaga does after shows

While you may be thinking that Lady Gaga hits the gym after a show, that’s not quite the case.

When she’s done with her show, the first thing she does is take an ice bath for five to ten minutes. Just one look at her Instagram picture of her ice bath shows that this is not a comfortable routine to go through every night. She has to in order to move past the more debilitating pain of Fibromyalgia.

Pain Scale reports: “Cold therapy is beneficial for many fibromyalgia sufferers to numb the affected area. The cold constricts the blood vessels and decreases blood flow, in turn, reducing inflammation.”

After she has completed her time in the ice bath, Lady Gaga gets a much more relaxing hot bath. Town and Country Magazine reports: “Heat will get your blood moving, which is not only great for circulation, but can also help sore or tight muscles to relax.”

Lady Gaga uses a compression suit

Even those who have fibromyalgia may be surprised by this choice, but there is some science behind the Alejandro singer’s choice. According to the Pain Doctor: “Compression garments can decrease chronic pain by increasing oxygenation and blood circulation. They may also reduce swelling and edema.”

Lady Gaga may be struggling, but she’s shown an enormous amount of courage in the past year and is an inspiration to fibromyalgia patients everywhere
