Celebs flocked to the red carpet for the Los Angeles premiere of Netflix‘s Running Point. The highly anticipated comedy series comes to the streaming platform on February 27. Kate Hudson, Mindy Kaling, Brenda Song, Max Greenfield, Chet Hanks, and Justin Theroux star in the Lakers-inspired show, causing fans of the storied NBA franchise to wonder what the organization thinks of Running Point. Fortunately, Jeanie Buss walked the red carpet to set the record straight.

Hudson returns to Netflix as Isla, the only sister in a competitive family that runs the Los Angeles Waves, a championship-winning NBA-esque basketball team based in LA. When her brother (Theroux) is forced to resign as president of the Waves, Isla is thrust into the ultimate leadership role, receiving the chance to prove herself in the male-dominated sports world.

Lakers fans know this storyline sounds familiar. Jeanie Buss, who famously took over the family business after her father, Jerry Buss, died in 2013, has become a legend in the NBA world. Under her leadership, the Lakers have won the 2020 NBA Championship and been valued at $7.1 billion. Now, her life story will (loosely) unfold on the small screen. When Netflix announced Running Point‘s premiere date, Jeanie responded with a tweet. “This looks a little familiar,” she posted on X. “@mindykaling and Kate Hudson on @netflix – sounds like a winner.”

As the Running Point project took shape, Hudson received Jeanie’s approval wholeheartedly. “Jeanie Buss, whom I’ve known for years, was a strong advocate for me taking on this role,” Hudson shared with Netflix. “Jeanie’s involvement added a layer of authenticity and excitement, as she brought her own experiences and insights into the mix. Knowing that Jeanie supported me gave me confidence and motivation to bring Isla to life in a way that honors the spirit of the show.”

The star-studded Running Point cast promises laughs and intrigue à la Ted Lasso. Brenda Song stars as Isla’s best friend and chief of staff for the Waves. Chet Hanks portrays Travis, a part-time rapper and full-time Waves point guard. New Girl‘s Max Greenfield appears as Isla’s fiancé, and Justin Theroux stars as Isla’s older brother, who gets into hot water and resigns as president of the basketball empire.

Hudson, who turned heads in a plunging gold gown at the LA premiere, told Netflix that she connects with her character “deeply.” I really love writing shows about ambitious women, whether they’re a 15-year-old girl in the Valley [Never Have I Ever] or the president of a basketball team,” the Glass Onion actor explained. “[Isla Gordon] is a strong woman navigating a high-pressure environment, and her journey is both entertaining and inspiring.”
