Lauren Graham Thinks a Young Lorelai ‘Gilmore Girls’ Spinoff Could Work
Walmart tapped into pop culture earlier this month when it released a holiday commercial featuring Stars Hollow and a few beloved Gilmore Girls characters. The commercial has renewed interest in a second Netflix revival of the show. While a second revival has not been announced, Lauren Graham, the actor who portrayed Lorelai Gilmore, thinks there are more stories to be told from the show’s universe. Graham recently shared her idea for a Gilmore Girls spinoff, and we like it.
Lauren Graham thinks a ‘Gilmore Girls’ prequel could work
Lauren Graham is not counting out the possibility of returning for a second Gilmore Girls revival. Still, she thinks there are other ways to extend the story of the Gilmores. In a chat with E! News, Graham posited that a Gilmore Girls spinoff about a young Lorelai Gilmore could work. The famed actor said Gilmore Girls could lean into the popularity of prequels for a potential spinoff.
If showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino took Graham’s advice, there would be no shortage of material to work with. Lorelai Gilmore’s background was the backbone of the beloved series. Born into a wealthy family, Lorelai becomes a teen mother and bucks tradition by refusing to marry Rory’s father. She opts to move away to forge an independent middle-class life for herself and her daughter. When fans first met her, she was already in her 30s with a teen daughter. Still, the show drew in her background often. Seeing Lorelai leave Hartford and find Stars Hollow as a teen with a baby would be interesting.
Several prequel series have been successful
Lauren Graham thinks a Gilmore Girls prequel could be a successful spinoff. We don’t disagree. After all, there have been several shows that have offered up prequels as spinoffs. Those shows have been largely successful. Even the spinoffs that haven’t been as successful as the original have found fanbases.
Young Sheldon is a prime example of a prequel spinoff that worked perfectly. The series, a spinoff of The Big Bang Theory, wrapped earlier this year after a seven-season run. The show focused on Sheldon Cooper’s early life in Texas. The origin story prequel works because Sheldon spoke regularly about his upbringing on The Big Bang Theory. He talked about it the same way Lorelai Gilmore spoke about her Hartford-based childhood.
Yellowstone has also had successful prequels. The Carrie Diaries attempted to fill in the blanks of Carrie Bradshaw’s life before Sex and the City. While The Carrie Diaries wasn’t nearly as successful as the original series, it still enticed fans to sit and watch, at least for a bit. We feel that a Lorelai-focused prequel would be a huge success.
