McDermott plays bad guy Richard Wheatley on Law & Order: Organized Crime. He’s a pharmaceutical executive by day and a mob boss by night. Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) thinks Wheatley might have something to do with the murder of his wife, Kathy.

McDermott was fascinated when he first received the script for Law & Order: Organized Crime, reports Variety. He says he was reminded of his New York upbringing and the time he spent as a bartender.

“They sent me the script, and I initially thought that it was fascinating, you know, growing up in New York and being around these mobsters here and there,” McDermott tells Variety. “I remember when [Mafia figure] Joey Gallo got killed. My father and I went down to Umberto’s Clam House [where Gallo was shot] and looked around, and it was all cordoned off. And you know, I was a bartender, busboy and a waiter, so I’ve been around these guys a little bit.”

McDermott says he didn’t realize how popular the Law & Order franchise was until he signed on. “I was like, whoa, this is a world here, I had no idea how dedicated the fans are,” he tells Variety. “I mean, people love this show. It’s a comfort show. They watch the DVDs over and over again… I’ve never heard of such a thing.”
