‘Law & Order: SVU’: What Peter Scanavino Did When He Found Out Carisi and Rollins’ Would Kiss
After years of waiting for it, Carisi and Rollins shippers finally got to see the two give in to their feelings on Law & Order: SVU. Series star Peter Scanavino first learned of the infamous season 22 kiss via script. And he recently revealed what he did when he first realized it was happening.
A Carisi and Rollins romance was teased for years on ‘Law & Order: SVU’
Dominick “Sonny” Carisi (Peter Scanavino) and Amanda Rollins (Kelli Giddish) first appeared as SVU partners in Law & Order: SVU season 16. Over the years, the two formed a great friendship. But their underlying romantic chemistry was always apparent.
The showrunners and writers decided to bring that chemistry to fruition in the season 22 finale. At Finn’s (Ice-T) wedding party, the two start talking about the wedding vows Carisi had written. The intimate moment leads to a kiss. And now, in season 23, Carisi and Rollins are finally an official couple.
‘Law & Order: SVU’ star Peter Scanavino reveals what he did when he learned about the kiss
In a recent interview with TV Line, Scanavino revealed that he found out about Carisi and Rollins’ kiss in season 22 when reading the episode’s script. And when he realized how it would change their storyline, he immediately contacted his co-star, Kelli Giddish.
“I remember reading the script, and then, at the end, it was ‘Rollins kisses Carisi,’ and I was like, ‘What?! Oh my God!’” Scanavino said. “I texted Kelli immediately and said, ‘We kiss in the next episode,’ which is weird because Kelli and I are such good friends. But it’s also this earned payoff of what they’ve been building over the past eight years.”
And after all that build-up, Scanavino felt like the Law & Order: SVU writers did justice to Rollins and Carisis’ kiss. “I like the direction that they went in. It didn’t feel forced to me,” he suggested. “It felt very earned. So, yeah, I mean that was kind of my reaction.”
The actor is excited to see where Carisi and Rollins’ relationship goes
In past seasons of Law & Order: SVU, Carisi and Rollins’ storylines were focused on their work and friendship. But Scanavino said he’s thrilled to see where this budding new romance takes them.
“[The kiss] was excitement, because it’s also character development, as well.,” the actor told TV Line. “It’s them throwing you a bone, and it’s something that you get to focus on, you know, in the relationship outside of the squad.”
“It just makes things more interesting, more dangerous, in a way,” Scanavino added. “Like, there’s all kinds of implications with this relationship. So, I was happy about it.”
Now that Carisi and Rollins are dating, work issues may begin to complicate things for them. As the Assistant District Attorney and SVU detective, they’ve already butt heads on one case this season. The couple managed to overcome their differences with that particular case, but their dynamic could create some riveting friction as the season progresses.
New episodes of Law & Order: SVU air Thursday nights on NBC.
