Is ‘Legacies’ Leaving Netflix in 2021?
Legacies is the only show in The Vampire Diaries universe that’s still running. The Vampire Diaries ended in 2017, and its first spin-off, The Originals, ended in 2018. The CW has a unique Netflix deal that has stood strong against the emergence of new streaming services.
But Netflix keeps losing pieces of its vast catalogue with every new streamer that debuts. So, will Legacies leave Netflix in 2021 for The CW’s parent company’s streaming platform, HBO Max?
When will ‘Legacies’ Season 3 be on Netflix?
Unlike The Originals, Legacies’ timeline doesn’t converge with The Vampire Diaries. So, if you’re planning on watching The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, and Legacies in chronological order, know that Legacies seasons 1 and 2 will be last. The third season is currently airing weekly on The CW.
One dedicated fan created a list of the best episode order for The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, accounting for their overlapping timelines. By the time you finish that binge, Legacies could already be on Netflix.
The spin-off show will air its season finale around June on The CW, and per the network’s Netflix deal, the entirety of season 3 will be available on the streamer eight days after the finale airs.
Could ‘The Vampire Diaries’ star Ian Somerhalder return for ‘Legacies’?
Legacies is all about the students of the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted. Caroline Forbes set up the school herself in honor of Stefan Salvatore after he died in the series finale of The Vampire Diaries. Caroline (Candice King) isn’t in the show. Rather, her daughters, Josie and Lizzie, say that she’s away working on things for the academy. Alaric Saltzman, Lizzie and Josie’s father, runs the school in Mystic Falls in her absence.
Also heard of but not seen in the show are Elena Gilbert and Damon Salvatore. Both of them had taken the cure for vampirism by the series finale, and they’ve been living out their human lives in Mystic Falls. Elena is the town doctor, and their daughter, Stefanie, is a high schooler at Mystic Falls High School. Elena and Damon’s first mention in Legacies is in season 1 episode 10, as is Stefanie Salvatore’s first appearance.
Fans are eager to know if they’ll see any of the stars of The Vampire Diaries in the show. Ian Somerhalder commented on the possibility in 2019. He told Entertainment Tonight that fans shouldn’t hold their breath—he’d rather direct. He said:
“I actually would love to talk to [show creator Julie Plec]. I would love to go and direct one of [the Legacies episodes]. Because I know Paul [Wesley] went to do it and he called me and he’s like, ‘Bro, this is f*cking crazy.’ Because it’s all of our old sets, which is a time warp, 10 years ago. He’s just going, ‘Dude!’ He was actually kind of emotional about it, he goes ‘This is crazy!’”
When ‘Legacies’ leaves Netflix depends on when the series ends
Legacies Season 3 will hit Netflix eight days after the season finale airs, but how long will it stay on the streaming platform? Thanks to The CW’s Netflix deal (which Netflix is undoubtedly happy it still has), Legacies will stay on the platform for five years after its final season.
The same goes for The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. That means the Nina Dobrev-led series will likely be removed from Netflix in March 2022, and The Originals will likely be removed in August 2023.
Legacies has been renewed for season 4, so fans won’t know its streamer fate until the final season is announced.Unless The CW inks a new deal with Netflix in favor of Warner Media’s HBO Max, fans can expect to see Legacies on Netflix for a long while.
