Lena Waithe and Alana Mayo surprisingly got married
Waithe and Mayo dated for three years before surprisingly getting married. The screenwriter talked about their private ceremony on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
“We snuck and did it,” she told John Legend. “We didn’t make any announcements.” She talked about the significance behind the location of where they got hitched.
“We went to the courthouse and got married right in front of Harvey Milk’s bust,” she said in reference to San Francisco City Hall. “It was her idea — like all good things are — and she was just driving and she saw the courthouse and she said, ‘We should get married there,’ and I said, ‘Cool, I’m down.’”
She told Legend, “It was a humbling day, you know, to marry someone so amazing, but also to really appreciate all the work that so many people have put in for us to be able to do that.”
The couple previously got engaged on Thanksgiving in 2017. The proposal also seemed to be low key except for the fact they went to Tokyo together. She revealed on the podcast, Homophilia:
The funny thing is, it was actually super-chill ’cause even though I am very over the top, my lovely lady is like the opposite, which is good, because I’m very much in front of the scene and she’s very much behind them…but I always tell people I Stepmom-ed it…like, it was just like in the morning, in the bed, no string, but, you know, it was super low key. But, yeah, that’s what I did for Thanksgiving.
Waithe talked about wedding planning with People. “It’s going to be super small, crazy small,” The Chi producer said. “It’s almost like an excuse to have fun with our friends.”
The reason given was that a small ceremony reflected them as a couple. “We’re anti-stress,” said Waithe. “We’re trying to make it not a stressful situation, that’s our goal.”
They announced that they have split
The former couple has revealed they are ending their relationship. They released a joint statement to announce the news.
“After careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways,” they said according to People. “We have nothing but support for one another and ask that you respect our privacy during this time.”
There wasn’t a reason given behind the decision. However, there is a new rumor about what ended things between them.
There is a rumor that Waithe cheated
Now there is a rumored reason why the marriage ended so quickly. A source claims the couple’s problems have been around for a while.
“Even after they married, Lena was still buying designer gifts — Chanel, Gucci — for other women,” a source claimed according to lovebscott.com. The insiders also claimed their unexpected wedding was what Alana wanted and the writer went with it to better their relationship.
Mayo and Waithe have yet to address the breakup again after their joint statement.
