Lenny Kravitz Says Lisa Bonet Brought Out Something in Him He Had ‘Never Seen Before’
Lenny Kravitz and Lisa Bonet were married from 1987 to 1993. Kravitz says Bonet had a major impact on him and she helped bring out a part of him he ‘had never seen before.’ Their bond resulted in something he never thought possible.
Lenny Kravitz was searching for himself
In his memoir, Let Love Rule, Kravitz says he was trying to find himself. He didn’t think people would accept him if he used his real name. When he first became a musical artist, he went by the name Romeo Blue. He even got a pair of blue contact lenses to complete the look. However, he says he was always searching for his true self. He didn’t completely feel comfortable with the image he created.
It took an interview Lisa Bonet did for Interview magazine for him to realize he was not living authentically. She called him by the stage name he was using at the time. After seeing that in print, he decided to go back to his real name. He says there was nothing about Bonet that was fake, and he was inspired to follow her example and be himself.
Lenny Kravitz says Lisa Bonet brought out an unseen part of him
According to Kravitz, after he met Bonet, he began to transform and discover who he was really meant to be. He says they used to have long conversations and connect on an intellectual and spiritual level. His interactions with her led him to blossom creatively. As Kravitz put it, “the poetry of her soul excited the poetry of my soul.”
Kravitz’s love for and awe of Bonet awakened within him a new way of creating music and filled him with inspiration. He says Bonet completely transformed his “artistic attitude,” and he went from wondering how he was going to make it to wondering how he could reveal his authentic self through his art.
Kravitz even changed his hair and got a nose piercing, like Bonet. In his book, he says A Different World wasn’t just the name of Bonet’s hit ‘80s show, it was also how his life felt when he was around her.
A friendship that grew into love
Kravitz and Bonet started out as friends before they began dating. They became close after he moved into her home. Kravitz says his daily commute took hours, so Bonet suggested he stay with her. The two had so much to discuss that they often talked from the morning until the night. Kravitz says their interactions felt “effortless.”
Before Kravitz and Bonet became a couple, Kravitz called off an engagement to another woman. He says she was so “obsessed” with Bonet that he couldn’t “stay away from her.” He was so enthralled with her that he wasn’t willing to let her go. Years before they met, Kravitz told a friend of his that he was going to marry Bonet. That day finally came when the eloped in 1987.
