Leonardo DiCaprio Thought Kate Winslet Was Out of Her Mind For Filming This Movie
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have been BFFs since their Titanic days. Years later, they admitted they text each other frequently and still quote lines from the movie every now and then. Like most best friends, DiCaprio and Winslet look out for one another and aren’t afraid to call each other out if the time comes. This is why DiCaprio had no problem telling Winslet she was out of her mind for filming one of her most dangerous movies.

Winslet once revealed that The Departed star Leonardo DiCaprio thought she was crazy for filming The Mountain Between Us with Idris Elba. But DiCaprio himself is no stranger to working in uncomfortable conditions for the art of film.
Director Fisher Stevens once recalled a time when DiCaprio had to be saved by Edward Norton because his tank wasn’t working after they had all dived underwater. In The Revenant, DiCaprio ate raw liver because the fake one didn’t look real enough for the movie. When it comes to filming, DiCaprio has proven that he’s willing to put his body, and sometimes even more, on the line for authenticity. When it comes to his best friends, however, he’d prefer they didn’t follow his method of acting.
This was the case with Kate Winslet, who was shooting The Mountain Between Us in subzero temperatures. When DiCaprio found out what kind of movie Winslet was filming, he couldn’t help but express concern.
“Leo said to me, ‘You are bloody out of your mind to do this,’” Winslet said according to newindianexpress. “’Do you know how hard it’s going to be? In those conditions, you’ll probably lose a limb.’”
Winslet, however, was already well prepared for the freezing temperatures in The Mountain Between Us. And she partially had her days in Titanic to thank for that.
How ‘Titanic’ helped prepare Kate Winslet for ‘The Mountain Between Us’
Winslet revealed that Titanic equipped her with the experience she needed to deal with the movie’s conditions. When asked if she was nervous about filming in the Canadian mountains, Winslet referenced Titanic as the reason she wasn’t.
“I did Titanic, dude,” Winslet once said according to Elle. “Falls through ice? No problem. Plane crash? Boat sinks? No biggie.”
Winslet later went on to say that The Mountain Between Us reminded her of her time in Cameron’s record-breaking film.
“There are so many outtakes where I’m like, ‘Ice, anyone? This brings back memories,’” Winslet said.
Still, Winslet conceded that filming the Mountain Between Us was tougher than filming Titanic.
“This was much harder than Titanic because we really were at 10,000 feet and it really was -38 degrees Celsius,” Winslet told E-News. “It was definitely reminiscent of certain other rather challenging, strenuous experiences I had 20 years ago.”’
Winslet kept DiCaprio updated on her time on set by exchanging texts and emojis.
“I would send him little photos of me saying, ‘Thinking of you,’ as I am lying in the freezing snow-covered ice and he would just send back slightly worried emojis,” the Oscar-Winner said.
Will Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet ever do another film together?
The last movie DiCaprio and Winslet starred in was Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road. Since then, fans have been wondering if the BFFs will ever reunite for a third film, and what the hold-up is. E-News asked Winslet if there were any films the two planned to collaborate on in the future.
“At the moment, no,” Winslet responded. “There’s nothing Leo and I have planned. But as always I would love to work with him again one day but who knows? It might not happen until we’re 70.”
There might be a segment of fans who’s more than happy to wait that long for a Winslet Dicaprio feature.
