Leonardo DiCaprio Reunites With 3 Former Co-Stars in ‘Don’t Look Up’
Leonardo DiCaprio has been a Hollywood icon for decades. In fact, by the time he won his first Academy Award — for 2015’s The Revenant — the honor felt long overdue by both industry insiders and fans alike. Now with Don’t Look Up, DiCaprio is back in the awards conversation. And in addition to the praise he’s received for his latest performance, the movie gives him the chance to reunite with three former co-stars.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s career started off in an unexpected place
In the early 1990s, DiCaprio was just an up-and-coming young star. He’d appeared on a few children’s TV series, including Romper Room and The Mickey Mouse Club. Then, after starring on the short-lived Parenthood TV series and a stint on Santa Barbera, DiCaprio landed what would be a major turning point for him: a regular role on TV’s Growing Pains.
That hit sitcom didn’t launch DiCaprio into superstardom, but it did get the ball rolling. That same year, the actor made his film debut in the direct-to-video Critters 3. Finally in 1993, he was on his way to becoming the star he would later evolve into, thanks to his Oscar-nominated role in What’s Eating Gilbert Grape. From then on, it didn’t take long for DiCaprio to begin rubbing elbows with some of Hollywood’s most beloved stars.
Leonardo DiCaprio reunites with three former co-stars
In Don’t Look Up, DiCaprio plays an astronomer who warns the world about an impending crisis. And in that role, the actor shares the screen with a gifted ensemble cast. And among them are a trio of stars whom DiCaprio already worked with on previous projects. First there’s three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep. She plays the president of the United States in the movie and first crossed paths with DiCaprio while the pair worked on 1996’s Marvin’s Room.
Likewise, Don’t Look Up co-stars Cate Blanchett, the actor who won her first Oscar for playing opposite DiCaprio in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator. In that movie, she plays Katharine Hepburn to DiCaprio’s Howard Hughes. Finally, Don’t Look Up reunites DiCaprio with Jonah Hill. The two actors notably shared the screen in 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street. But technically, their first shared credit is Django Unchained, for which Hill made an uncredited cameo.
‘Don’t Look Up’ is available on Netflix on December 24
Considering DiCaprio’s real-life activism with the environment makes sense with director Adam McKay’s satirical disaster movie. Still, Don’t Look Up is one of the actor’s rare comedies. So it will be interesting to see how he does in the genre now.
If nothing else, DiCaprio has a lot of great company in the movie. In addition to Streep, Blanchett, and Hill, Don’t Look Up features Jennifer Lawrence, Mark Rylance, Timothée Chalamet, and Ariana Grande. It’s in theaters now and available for streaming on Netflix on Dec. 24.
