Leonardo DiCaprio Once Shared That His Mom Was the Only Person He’d Buy Diamonds For
Leonardo DiCaprio’s massive net worth has allowed him to buy lavish gifts for himself, friends, and family. But there’s one item he’d usually gift to his mom, Irmelin Indenbirken, and no one else.
Leonardo DiCaprio’s lavish gifts for his mom
DiCaprio has had plenty of women in his life. It’s likely he’s bought a few luxurious treats for some of them. For instance, Daily Mail once alleged that the Oscar winner bought ex-girlfriend Blake Lively a brand new Prius. A source claimed that DiCaprio didn’t like the idea of Lively driving a Range Rover at the time. It was alleged that he felt the Prius, which cost $40,000, would be much less of a burden on the environment.
The only item he likely hasn’t bought any of his past girlfriends is diamonds. He typically only purchases these luxury gemstones for one woman.
“My mom was the only person I would really buy something like that for,” DiCaprio once told Phase9. “And for a while now, she hasn’t wanted one.”
DiCaprio has even competed for gifts just to give them to his mom. Elle reported back in 2016 that DiCaprio outbid a room full of wealthy patrons for a Chanel bag that cost him $24,700. One of the celebrities he outbid for the item was celebrity heiress Paris Hilton. It wasn’t the only time DiCaprio outbid competitors for gifts for his family.
Given his upbringing, it’s easy to see why DiCaprio treats and pampers his mom. Although he and his family were very poor growing up, their circumstances motivated him to get into acting.
“Money was always on my mind when I was growing up,” he once told The Telegraph.
“So I was always wondering how we were going to afford this and that,” DiCaprio added. “Acting seemed to be a shortcut out of the mess.”
The Titanic star credited his parents’ valuable support for helping him succeed.
“I’m completely indebted to them in every single way,” DiCaprio said. “They listened to me, you see. They listened to their kid saying, ‘This is what I want to do,’ and they supported me unconditionally; they made me feel that all my dreams were within reach. Now I know a lot of people who have grown up in much better-off families, with much more solid family structures, who haven’t in any way had that level of love in their lives.”
Leonardo DiCaprio’s dad gave him the greatest gift
It might not be easy trying to come up with a gift for a man who can afford anything. But DiCaprio’s father, George DiCaprio, felt he’d already given his son one of his greatest gifts before his success. In an interview with The New York Times, George felt he gave DiCaprio his fearlessness, which helped turn him into a superstar.
“Leo is on a quest to find out how many things he can do in life and not do them straight,” DiCaprio’s father said. “He would walk to the guillotine and act goofy. We think he’s actually an alien, wired a different way than us. There’s something going on in him that we don’t understand.”
His Mom, Irmelin, couldn’t have been prouder of her son’s meteoric rise back then. But at the same time, what she wanted most for her son was something DiCaprio didn’t need millions of dollars to buy.
“I’m overwhelmed,” Irmelin said about DiCaprio. “I can’t see him as other people do. All I’m concerned about is his health — sleep more, exercise more, eat better. That’s the litany. The rest, I wouldn’t care if he gave it up tomorrow.”
