Liam Gallagher Once Heckled His Brother During an Oasis Concert After Giving a ‘F***ing Dreadful’ Performance During Rehearsal 

In 1996, Liam Gallagher missed out on performing in an Oasis concert, but he still made his presence at the show very noticeable. After a lack of attendance at rehearsal and a drunken arrival at the show, Liam decided not to take the stage. Noel Gallagher sang lead and had to drown out the sound of his brother’s heckling.

Liam Gallagher consistently didn’t show up at rehearsal for an Oasis show

In 1996, Oasis prepared to perform on MTV Unplugged. While this was a big achievement for the band, preparations for it did not go smoothly for them. Liam complained of a sore throat and hardly spent any time at rehearsals as a result. His presence was so unpredictable that the crew began to wonder if he would even go onstage on the day of the show.

“We were being told he didn’t want to sing too much because he wanted to save his voice,” associate producer Jac Benson said, per Music Radar. “But you get to the point where it’s like ‘What’s up with this guy? Is he going to show or not?’”

On the day of the performance, Liam showed up, but it was clear to everyone that he wasn’t prepared to get onstage. 

“I think we’d rehearsed for two weeks beforehand and Liam only turned up once or twice,” Noel said. “The day of the performance, he hadn’t turned up and there were rumors that he’d been out drinking for a couple of days … and nobody knew where he was. About an hour before we were due to go on, he turned up, absolutely sh** faced. We said, well look, let’s see if you can sing a couple of songs, and it was f***ing dreadful.”

He ultimately told the band he was not going to perform with them.

When Noel got onstage, he told the audience Liam wouldn’t be there. Noel sang lead instead.

“I think I did a f***ing great job to be quite honest with you,” he said. 

It wasn’t an easy show, though. He had to deal with his brother heckling him from the balcony above.

“I remember hearing someone say ‘Liam’s in the house,’” Benson said. “One of the camera guys pans up and there’s Liam with some champagne. He was drinking and just slow handclapping. As soon as he knew the camera was on him he sort of acknowledged the fact that ‘yes I’m up here drinking in the balcony and not performing today.’”

Noel eventually told him to “shut up.” At the end of the performance, producers asked if the band could play the first song again. Liam then decided he wanted to get onstage.

“And of course then Liam comes on and he wants to sing,” Noel recalled. “After we’ve played for an hour and a half or something. We told him to f*** off. And he went home sulking.”

The band recently announced a new tour

Oasis went through many other concerts like this one before they eventually broke up in 2009. This year, though, they announced plans for a summer tour of the United Kingdom and Ireland in 2025.

“The guns have fallen silent. The stars have aligned. The great wait is over,” the band said in a statement. “Come see. It will not be televised.”
