Lil Nas X Says He’d Planned to Die With His Sexuality a Secret
In early 2019, Lil Nas X exploded onto the mainstage through TikTok and his explosive smash hit, “Old Town Road.” From there, he absolutely skyrocketed on the main stage. Just two years ago, born, Montero Lamar Hill, the 20-year-old was sleeping on the floor at his sister’s apartment and enjoying memes on the internet like the rest of us. However, he’d also been working on music. “Old Town Road” was just one of those songs, and it became a massive hit on TikTok. He made the song on in a $20-an-hour studio, on a laptop with a beat found on YouTube.
Still, as his success skyrocketed, so did questions about his sexuality. In June 2019, Lil Nas X officially came out in the most nonchalant and humorous way. He tweeted, “Deadass thought I made it obvious,” he wrote, accompanied by a ton of rainbow emojis. However, his choice to come out was much more complicated than that.
Lil Nas X explained why he waited to come out
Coming out is a very personal decision for anyone on the queer community and Lil Nas X is no different. “I 100% want to represent the LGBTQ community,” he told The Guardian.
However, he definitely understands that being open is no easy choice for many LGBTQ youth. “I don’t want to encourage them to do something they don’t 100% want to do,” he explained. “Especially in, like, middle school or high school. Because it’s just super hard. It’s easier for me. I’m not depending on anybody. There’s no one who’s going to kick me out of the house – nobody to start treating me shitty. My family knows now. But it’s not something that’s ever brought up or we speak about. We’re quiet on it. Nobody’s like, ‘Oh, you got a boyfriend?’”
Lil Nas X may have a secret boyfriend
Though the “Panini” rapper has been open with his fans, his personal life remains somewhat a mystery. In 2019, he revealed that he is “somewhat” in a relationship. However, he’s said very little else about it. His massive family, which includes seven brothers and sisters also remains in the shadows.
“I should talk to them more,” he said to The Guardian. We do know that the Georgia-born rapper has no contact with his mother, and he hasn’t for several years. “People have to be willing to help themselves first before you can help them,” he explained.
Lil Nas X never planned to come out
Knowing the homophobia and violence that the LGBTQ community still faces, Lil Nas X never actually planned to come out to the world. “The honest truth is, I planned to die with the secret,” he told The Guardian of his sexuality. “But that changed when I became Lil Nas X.”
In addition to being more open, the rapper has used fashion, styled by Hodo Musa, to present himself to the world. “I’m trying to – no, I will build myself up as a superstar, and fashion will be a big part of that,” he revealed.
