Though we now know them as Zoë Kravitz’s ageless parents, Lisa Bonet and Lenny Kravitz were once a major Hollywood A-list couple. Though their marriage ended just a few years after it began in the ’90s, the duo has always been super close.
In fact, they can often be seen together supporting their actress daughter at various events, both private and public. Also, the rock star has also formed a close friendship to Bonet’s current husband — Aquaman actor Jason Momoa.
Since Kravitz and Bonet get along so well now, it’s startling to consider why they even divorced in the first place.

When Bonet and Kravitz first crossed paths, she was already a bonafide superstar with her role as Denise Huxtable on The Cosby Show. Kravitz was an unknown struggling musician whom the press often called, “Mr. Bonet.” “She was like a female version of me,” Kravitz told Rolling Stone in 1995. “That woman inspired me so much. It was a magical time that she and I shared. I just opened up artistically.”
The pair initially were just friends and roommates. Eventually, their relationship turned romantic with the duo eloping in 1987 and welcoming their daughter, Zoë, in December 1988.

When Bonet and Kravitz were together, they appeared to be the picture of perfection. Sadly by 1991, they had separated, finalizing their divorce in 1993. It turns out, that they were both just extremely young. “I think I just wasn’t ready,” Kravitz told Flatt in 2014. “I had to take a break. I went through a lot of emotional things, a lot of deaths in my family.”
The period following the divorce was especially troubling for the “American Woman” rocker. “I was in a tremendous amount of pain when we broke up, tremendous,” he told Rolling Stone. “For, like, six months, I only slept for two hours a day, from 4 a.m. to 6 a.m. The rest of the time I was just up, like a zombie. I was floored.”

Though their divorce was extremely painful, Bonet and Kravitz are now best friends. Kravitz is even close to his daughter’s younger siblings that Bonet has with her current husband, Momoa.
“Zoë’s mom and I now are best friends,” he revealed on Oprah’s Master Class. “When we’re all together now — her man, her kids, Zoë, me — we’re all together and we’re one big, happy family. It’s beautiful and it just shows you what can be done.”
When Zoë Kravitz wed in the summer of 2019 at her dad’s home, her entire family was on hand to witness her joy. “Lenny was thrilled his daughter decided to have her wedding at his home in Paris,” an insider told Entertainment Tonight. “He was gushing about how happy he was she had found the love of her life, and how proud he was of all her incredible accomplishments. During the party, the Champagne flowed and Lenny and Jason, who are good friends, chatted and both agreed they loved Karl [Glusman].”
