Twenty-five years after The Lion King slayed our lives, we are returning to Pride Rock. Disney is presenting a 21st-century audience with a new spectacular live-action version of the beloved father/son classic, and we couldn’t be more excited. Since the first teaser trailer from the film debuted in Nov. 2018 –fans have been eagerly anticipating the film’s July 19, 2019 release.

However, a full-length trailer for the movie just dropped–revealing the villainous Scar (voiced by Chiwetel Ejiofor) for the first time and to say that fans are horrified by the sinister lion’s appearance would be the understatement of the century.

Why do fans hate Scar’s apperence in the live-action version of The Lion King?

People are still clutching their pearls now that Disney has unveiled Scar in the live action Lion King. First and foremost –Scar’s luxurious black mane is nowhere to be found. Instead, the lion has a tuff of hair atop his head. Also, instead of a darker fur color –Scar looks very similar to both Simba and Mufasa. We realize the movie is going for a realistic lion look –but we don’t want it!

One Twitter user was so horrified she tweeted, “Scar I’m so sorry sweetie #TheLionKing” While another started a hashtag saying #NotMyScar. One Lion King fan pointed out what we’re all thinking saying, “OG Scar: evil and pompous as hell. Remake Scar: a ratty looking lion I guess.” Another Twitter user provided an example of what the live action Scar should’ve looked like, and we think they absolutely nailed it.

Still, one Twitter user did point out that this version of Scar is accurate. They tweeted, “It’s factually accurate though. Lions with longer and darker manes are the dominant males in a pride. Shorter, lighter manes indicate either young lions, or the non-dominant male.” We just want Scar to have his blow out back –we didn’t ask for this!

Who will star in 2019’s The Lion King?

In addition to Chiwetel Ejiofor –who has a lot to live up to after Jeremy Irons’ iconic portrayal of Scar, the live-action version of The Lion King has a massive and very notable cast. Donald Glover will star as s Simba, Beyoncé Knowles Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones is reprising his role as Mufasa, Billy Eichner will voice Timon, and Seth Rogen was star as Pumbaa. Composer Hans Zimmer has also signed on to score the film — he scored the original movie back in 1994. The film will be helmed by director Jon Favreau who brought The Jungle Book to life.

How much did the live action version of The Lion King cost to make?

Though the budget for the live-action Lion King hasn’t officially been confirmed, Marvel Studios boss, Kevin Feige let it slip that the movie would have a $250 million budget and it looks like every penny was well spent. Not only did Disney have to get the animation and music just right, but they also had to be able to afford Beyoncé, which we’re sure was a costly penny.

The original animated classic only cost Disney $45 million, and it made almost $1 billion back in the box office across the globe. The Lion King’s budget also gives Favreau a bit more to play with then he had for The Jungle Book which was budgeted at $177 million. With all of that money –the could have certainly spent more time on Scar’s luxurious mane or at least given him a more noticeable scar.
