Lizzo has built her professional success on a combination of her incredible talent, unique skillset, and consistent dedication to body positivity. She brings all of these elements forward in her reality series Watch Out for the Big Grrrls.

The Amazon Prime series promises to show viewers a fierce competition with the hard-working winners becoming new members of Lizzo’s dance crew. Sure, the show has the kind of drama and suspense any reality show possesses, but it does more than that.

As The New York Times reports, “One of the unique elements of Lizzo’s show is how seriously it takes both the talents and struggles of its aspiring ‘Big Grrrls.’ Every episode features athletic feats performed by larger-than-average bodies.” The show is also breaking the reality TV mold by refusing to fall into the simple narratives of “elimination” seen on other series.

Early on, Lizzo tells the dancers she won’t be doing weekly eliminations and that it’s possible all of the contestants could win by the end. However, it won’t be easy. “Lizzo’s warmer and more supportive moments are tempered by her choreographer Tanisha Scott, who brings tough love and an exacting rigor to her rehearsals,” as the New York Times explains.

These women include Lizzo’s longtime friends, like Sophia Eris, who has collaborated with the singer since 2011.

Helping make tough decisions and giving meaningful feedback are also Lizzo’s established longtime dancers. They know better than anyone just what it takes to keep up with the dynamic singer on stage. This includes dancer Shirlene Quigley has more than two decades of dancing experience as Amazon points out on Instagram. Her previous credits include dancing with Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Missy Elliott.

These longtime friends provide the contestants with the reality checks and praise they need to reach their full potential.
