Lizzo’s ‘Phone’ Became a Fan-Favorite Lip-Sync Performance on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars’
These queens were truly lip-syncing for their legacy. Here’s what we know about Ginger Minj and Mayhem Miller’s iconic performance of Lizzo’s “Phone,” featured on RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars 6.
Mayhem Miller and Ginger Minj performed a lip-sync to ‘Phone’ by Lizzo
This year brought new episodes of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars, including some with the “glamor toad” herself, Ginger Minj. As the winner of that week’s challenge, Ginger lip-synced against an “assassin” for a chance to earn a cash tip from RuPaul.
The song featured during this episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars 6 was Lizzo’s “Phone,” and, after an iconic performance from these drag queens, this lip-sync became a favorite of some viewers.
“It’s so funny to me because I have never lost a lip-sync on Drag Race — ever,” Ginger Minj said during an interview with Nylon. “Even on season seven, I won those lip-syncs too, but nobody ever paid attention to it until the Lizzo lip-sync.”
“Now they’re like, ‘Yasss! Come on, assassin! Come through!’ But it’s just so funny to me because I’ve never had to sashay away because of a lip-sync…,” she continued. “Mayhem [Miller] and I were just going back and forth. I love her. I love performing with her.“
This ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars 6’ lip-sync became a favorite of many ‘Drag Race’ fans
As the “lip-sync assassin” of this episode, Mayhem Miller matched Ginger Minj’s energy, leading to a positive response from the remaining contestants.
Complete with a shoe prop for a phone, this lip-sync became a favorite of many RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars viewers. The YouTube video of this lip sync performance holds over a million views, with some comments calling this clip the “best lip sync ever.”
Lizzo appeared as a guest judge during ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 10
“Phone” wouldn’t be the first time Lizzo’s music appeared as the “lip-sync for your life” song. During RuPaul’s Drag Race season 10, Kameron Michaels and Monét X Change performed “Good As Hell,” with Monét even sliding into a stage light during the lip-sync.
That was the same episode that Lizzo set behind the judge’s panel, along with RuPaul, Michelle Visage, and other judges. This was a special moment for the performer, she shared, as a longtime supporter of the LGBTQ community.
“Me and RuPaul were kind of matching on the show; we were very cute, we totally coordinated,” Lizzo said during an interview with Gay Times. “Ru famously never turns his head, because he’s got his camera line and he just focuses on that, and that beat is just so perfect I wouldn’t turn my head either, but Ru turned his head and looked at me and said, ‘You got this kid’, and I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ My toes went numb – and not just because those heels hurt.”
