‘Locke & Key’: What Key Did Eden and Gabe Make in the Season 2 Teaser?
The demons are up to no good in the Locke & Key teaser. Netflix unveiled the latest look at the upcoming season 2 of its magical mystery, gearing fans up for what looks to be a wild ride. Of course, the teaser gave a glimpse at some new and old keys, including one never-before-seen key at the end. Is the key a nod to Joe Hill’s Locke & Key comic series, or is it an entirely new creation?
[Spoiler alert: The following story contains some spoilers for Locke & Key Season 1.]
Netflix unlocked a new ‘Locke & Key’ Season 2 teaser with release date
As a reminder, in season 1, Tyler (Connor Jessup), Kinsey (Emilia Jones), and Bode Locke (Jackson Robert Scott) discovered several magical keys in their late father’s family home, called Keyhouse, in Matheson, Massachusetts. The more keys they found, the more a demon posing as a woman named Dodge (Laysla De Oliveira) tried to steal them.
At the end of the season, Dodge used the Identity Key to pose as Kinsey’s friend Gabe (Griffin Gluck). Meanwhile, she turned Locke family friend Ellie (Sherri Saum) into Dodge. So, when the kids thought they threw Dodge through the Omega Door to another realm, they actually threw Ellie.
The Locke & Key Season 2 teaser, seen below, shows the aftermath of the Locke kids’ dangerous mission with the Omega Key. Gabe/Dodge and a possessed Eden (Hallea Jones) wreak havoc on Matheson, the Locke kids, and their friends.
“It’s time to finish what I started,” Gabe said.
The new season looks like a dangerous yet exciting adventure for the teens. Fans won’t have to wait long for Locke & Key Season 2, as the teaser announced a release date: Oct. 22.
What’s with the key at the end of the teaser?
The final moments of the Locke & Key teaser show Gabe welding a new key. When he holds the key in front of him, viewers can see it appears to have the face of an angry animal, gargoyle, or some other creature. Unfortunately, the teaser doesn’t show off what the key can do, but that menacing face doesn’t make it seem like something fun.
The new key doesn’t appear to be a direct reference to any of the keys in the comic books, as none of them have that head. However, it could be an interpretation of the Animal Key, which features a clawed animal paw in the comics. The key turns its user into an animal. In the comics, one of the original key owners became a cougar, which could be the animal featured on the key Gabe makes.
Of course, Gabe could make a new key entirely. Gabriel Rodríguez, the artist for the comic series, tweeted in June 2020 that showrunner Meredith Averill tapped him to design some new keys for season 2.
There are still plenty of keys from the comics
Netflix has already greenlit Locke & Key for season 3, so fans will likely see plenty more keys. The comics have nearly 40 keys to choose from, should the adaptation decide to use them. Some fan-favorite keys are the Timeshift Key, the Alpha Key, and the Angel Key, but the possibilities are wide open.
Which ones will Tyler, Kinsey, and Bode discover next? Hopefully, they’ll find something to combat Gabe’s creepy key.
Locke & Key Season 2 premieres on Oct. 22, 2021, on Netflix.
