Loki Expected to Appear in ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’
With every new movie and TV series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe grows more complex, and the season finale of Loki took that to the extreme. Viewers were left stunned by the events of the final episode of the first season and what it means for the MCU.
Although executives at Marvel Studios are careful not to give away too many hints about what’s happening next, fans think they have figured a few things out. It seems that Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston) may be appearing in the upcoming Doctor Strange movie — and he might not be the only character from the series who will.
‘Loki’ second season gets the stamp of approval
Loki is the third TV series Marvel has brought to Disney+, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, it’s already broken new ground. The other two series, WandaVision and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, haven’t come back for second seasons. WandaVision was always intended to be a limited mini-series, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier storyline was continued in a movie.
However, the chaotic season finale of Loki included a subtle promise of a second season. During the end credits scene, there’s a brief glimpse of a stamp that reads “Loki Season 2.”
Of course, it could be argued that every MCU plot is continued because the universe is connected in so many complicated ways. And it seems that Loki’s story will continue in more ways than the second series of his namesake show.
Will Loki appear in ‘Doctor Strange’?
The season finale of Loki set up the storyline for the next installment in the Doctor Strange (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) story, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And according to Digital Spy, everyone’s favorite God of Mischief will appear in the movie as well. This hasn’t been verified by Marvel.
The ending of the first season of Loki brought the MCU multiverse into action. The title of the new Doctor Strange movie makes it clear that he’ll be fighting to prevent a multiverse war. It seems logical that Loki could help him with that, given his role in creating this mess.
However, Loki and Doctor Strange’s timelines don’t quite align. Loki’s story happens during the Avengers timeline, while Doctor Strange comes along later in the universe. Then again, since Loki and Sylvie were involved with the Time Variance Authority, they may be outside time, and able to drop in on any point of a given timeline.
What about Mobius?
The growing number of interconnected stories and characters in the MCU have made it increasingly complicated to keep the events straight. As writer Michael Waldron told ScreenRant, these interacting storylines are a lot of work for the writers.
“I think that everybody — all the filmmakers and writers of the MCU — are all custodians of this thing, because we all end up both creating problems and solving problems for one another,” he explained.
The way Marvel Studios protects information about these complex storylines gives fans a lot of room to guess about what’s ahead. Not only are many speculating about Loki’s role in the next Doctor Strange movie, but they’re also wondering about another character.
Since Loki ended with him attempting to warn Mobius (played by Owen Wilson) about what’s about to happen to the multiverse, will he join the fight too?
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness isn’t scheduled to come out until March 2022, so we won’t know for a while. But until then, fans will watch eagerly for any hints to prove their theories are correct.
