Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have been anxiously waiting for the next phase to kick into gear. But with new films delayed until the end of the year, some are biding their time by fantasizing about a Loki and Killmonger match up. The villains would be formidable foes, but MCU fans are torn over who would win.

Loki first appeared in MCU’s ‘Thor’

The lovable, mischievous villain, Loki (Tom Hiddleston), was first introduced into the MCU in the 2011 film Thor. He then appeared in five more movies in the series, including Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame

Loki is the adopted son of Odin (Anthony Hopkins) and brother to Thor (Chris Hemsworth). He was abandoned as a baby in the realm of the Frost Giants, so Odin used magic to make him look like an Asgardian. Thor’s mother raises Loki as her own and teaches him how to master magic and the art of illusion.

In his early movies, Loki attempts to betray his brother. But in Thor: Dark World, he saves Thor and proves he has a good side. In the next few films, Loki works with Thor to try and save his homeworld and the rest of the universe.

Killmonger was introduced in ‘Black Panther’

In the 2018 MCU film, Black Panther, Erik Stevens, aka Killmonger, aka N’Jadaka (Michael B. Jordan), is introduced as T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) long lost cousin. After fighting as a highly-skilled and trained soldier in the military, Killmonger returns to Wakanda with an agenda. He plans to avenge his father, claim T’Challa’s throne, and use Wakanda’s vibranium technology to overpower the rest of the world.

Killmonger challenges T’Challa to a fight for the throne and defeats him. He then ingests a magical heart-shaped herb that enhances his strength and power. But with the help of the Jabari Tribe, and his friends and family, T’Challa returns to battle Killmonger. When Killmonger is stabbed with a spear and severely injured, T’Challa offers to take him to be healed. But Killmonger refuses and ends up dying on his own terms

MCU fans are torn over who would win a fight

Killmonger is far grittier and darker than Loki, but both are driven by narcissistic jealousy of their brothers. This similarity between the two villains is probably what drove fans to pit them against each other in a fantasy battle. But as to who would win, fans are torn.

Some are sure Loki would emerge victorious because of his alien lineage and ability to perform magic. “While Killmonger is a highly-skilled mercenary, Loki is a mystic controller that can summon mirror images of himself, thus wasting his enemy’s ammo and ultimately rendering the weapons useless when depleted,” one fan suggested on Twitter

“Loki single-handedly forced the Avengers to be formed,” another Twitter fan pointed out. “Loki may not be the best in hand to hand combat like Killmonger, but he does know how to toy around with his opponent until he finds their weakness and then strike. Killmonger is brash and would easily fall into Loki’s trap.”

But some, not many, fans feel Killmonger would have the upper hand because he’s smart. “The thing is tho… Killmonger ain’t stupid enough to go against a literal god,” one fan tweeted. “He’s a smart one.”

Some also pointed out that Loki isn’t without weakness, as he was once smashed around like a ragdoll by The Hulk. “People saying that Killmonger wouldn’t stand a chance against Loki ‘cause he’s god so let me remind you what Hulk did to him…” another Twitter user pointed out

At the end of the day, it looks like more fans are leaning toward Loki as the winner. While it will likely never be a battle that will make it to screen, it’s still a fun way to kill time until Black Widow premieres in November.
