Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have one of the longest marriages in Hollywood. Although they’re deeply in love, they still have arguments. Here’s what the couple said about the longest fight they ever had.
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick have different approaches to life
One thing that attracted Bacon to Sedgwick was that she was “the right amount of different” from him. In Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas’ book, What Makes a Marriage Work, Bacon said he and Sedgwick had different upbringings and very different approaches to life.
“She has a more mercurial kind of approach to life, with really big heights of joy and then super, super sadness on bad days,” Bacon told Donahue and Thomas. “She comes from a world where everybody—pretty much on both sides of her family—was into thoughts and feelings. It’s an emotional honesty. My upbringing was much more held in, so I’ve had to learn how to be more open and comfortable expressing doubts and fears and pain and anxiety and all those things.”

Although Bacon and Sedgwick have a loving relationship, they do argue occasionally. The couple told Donahue and Thomas the longest fight they ever had was back in the 1990s. They were living in Connecticut at the time and their children were young. Sedgwick, who is from New York, wanted to move to the city. However, Bacon liked where they lived and didn’t want to move. They argued for six months about their living arrangement.
“It was really, really bad,” Sedgwick told Donahue and Thomas. Bacon eventually gave in, but not without a fight. Sedgwick said her husband returned to New York “kicking and screaming.”
Bacon says he felt financial pressure when he arrived in New York. He was burdened by the task of finding a reasonably priced New York City apartment that was big enough for a family. “I felt a lot of financial pressure,” Bacon told Donahue and Thomas. “I always think that every job I do is my last job.”

Divorce is a common occurrence among Hollywood couples, but Bacon and Sedgwick want to do what they can to avoid splitting up. Sedgwick says there is no backup plan. She and her husband fight everyday to make their marriage work.
The thing is, there is no Plan B. No matter what, we want to work it out. I come from divorce, and I think that we both knew that we had to stay strong and that our thing had to come first. Yes, when the kids needed to be attended to, they did come first; but we knew they were going to go away at some point, and we were going to be left together.
Since my parents had an unhappy marriage, I wanted to make sure that we were modeling a good marriage for the children—that we could quibble about things and get over it, and that it’s not too scary. No one gets too loud.
