Lorde burst onto the music scene nearly a decade ago, and since then, the Grammy-winning singer has made a name for herself worldwide. But despite being a household name around the globe, Lorde herself still has a soft spot for her native New Zealand.

Lorde is a proud Kiwi

Lorde was born Ella Yelich O’Connor in November 1996 in Auckland, New Zealand. At just 16 years old, Lorde topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart with her smash single “Royals” in 2013. She became more well known in the United States and other parts of the world beyond her native New Zealand.

Still, New Zealand holds a special place in Lorde’s heart. In 2016, she bought a home in one of New Zealand’s most upscale suburbs worth nearly $3 million NZ dollars (approximately $2 million USD), according to the New Zealand Herald.

“It’s so kind of warm and so, there’s a real Kiwi thing where nobody feels like a stranger,” the singer said in a 2017 appearance on local news program Seven Sharp. “People come over and talk like they’ve known you your entire life; I love that about Kiwis.”

Lorde loves Christmas in the summer

As someone who hails from the Southern Hemisphere, Lorde grew up with winters in the middle of the year and summers at the start and end of every year. According to Music News, while some of her fans from the Northern Hemisphere are confused by the concept, she loves her home’s seasonal calendar — especially when it comes to the holidays.

“I am a Southern hemisphere girl, which means that summer for me is December, January and February, which always seems really hard for people not from the Southern hemisphere to wrap their heads around,” she admitted. “I guess it’s the idea of having a holiday season that is warm and includes swimming.”

“We get Christmas trees, but they get too hot; it’s not the right season for them. And we eat some traditional Christmas food, but you don’t really want to be eating roast potatoes in the height of summer,” she continued. “It’s just different, but it’s what I’ve always known, and it’s my absolute favorite time of year. I think the fact that it’s so imbued with the spirit of the holidays, which is so loving and celebratory and a little silly, that combined with the beautiful weather is just so sick.”

Lorde’s latest album ‘Solar Power’

Lorde’s latest album is all about celebrating warm weather and feeling alive. Solar Power was released in August 2021 and was preceded by singles including “Stoned At the Nail Salon,” “Mood Ring,” and the title track.”

She told The New York Times that the album took a different direction that she had planned when she was recording it. “I thought I was going to make this big acid record, but I don’t think it was an acid album,” she said. “I had one bad acid experience in this album, and I was like, ‘Meh, it’s a weed album’. It’s one of my great weed albums.”
