‘Love Is Blind’: Why Giannina and Damian’s First Date ‘Didn’t Go so Hot’–’It Was Like the Latina Feistiness’
Giannina Gibelli and Damian Powers fell in love and got engaged on the first season of Netflix’s Love Is Blind. They did not get married, but the two are still happily together today.
On the April 14 episode of the Love In Sight podcast, the couple recounted their first date in the pods. It didn’t go so well. According to Damian, technical difficulties were largely to blame.
Giannina and Damian’s first date on ‘Love Is Blind’
“Our first date didn’t go so hot. Day one we had 15 dates, you know, 15 different women, 15 different men, seven minutes apiece. A whole bunch of mic issues and stuff when you’re going into these pods. You hope you’re not linked with the pod right across from you. You never know what’s going on. I walked in and I was like, ‘Hi,’” he began.
At the same time, Giannina walked in and said, “Hey, what’s your name?” but Damian didn’t hear her. So he said again: “Hi, what’s your name?”
And, defiantly, Giannina said: “I asked you first.”
“And I was like, ‘OK, well my name’s Damian. Can I have your name now?’ You felt that tension. It was like the Latina feistiness. I was like, ‘D*mn, that voice.’ I was really in this conflict of like, gorgeous voice. I talked to her for a few minutes and I was like, ‘This is the sexiest voice I have probably ever heard in my life.’ I’ve traveled around the world. And I was just in awe. Man, that was a lot. She was very aggressive, but maybe I should try it again,” said Damian.
After their first day of dates, Damian said he spoke to host Nick Lachey.
“He was like, ‘How’re your dates going? Is there anyone you wouldn’t go on a date with again?’”
Damian says he thought of his date with Giannina.
“Maybe one or two. One was just really like fiesty. The other one just wasn’t working,” he told him.
At the end of the first day, the couple says they ranked each other at about 6 or 7 out of 15. Nothing special.
When Damian knew he wanted to marry Giannina
Damian says their second date was “normal,” but he was “still enthralled by that voice.”
“Out of every date I’d been on, I actually just want to hear that voice again. I don’t care what comes out of that mouth. I just want to hear that voice again,” he said.
On day three, Lachey asked Damian who he would marry if he had to pick right then. Damian said Giannina. The spark only got stronger from there.
