We’ve been keeping up with the Roloffs for years, and a ton has changed for Amy Roloff on Little People, Big World. Matt and Amy divorced years ago, and they’ve since gone their separate ways with new relationships. While Amy expressed in the past that she never envisioned she’d get married again, everything’s changed thanks to her partner, Chris Marek. Now, the two are engaged to be married, and Amy couldn’t be more excited.

There’s no doubt Amy’s family is happy for her as well. But Amy told her son, Zach, that she was engaged while they both were on-camera — and Zach wasn’t pleased with how it all went down. Here’s why Amy’s approach upset him.

Amy Roloff is happily engaged to Chris Marek

Amy and her fiancé, Marek, have been together for over three years — and they hit it off right from the get-go. When Amy was first going through her divorce, she noted she didn’t think she’d ever find another person to spend her life with. But now that Marek’s here, Amy’s excited for her future. And she’s shared plenty of information about her engagement with her followers.

“And to my wonderful happy surprise he proposed and asked me to marry him! I couldn’t believe it!” Amy captioned her Instagram post back in September 2019. “I cried, he had tears and of course I said YES! I’m engaged and couldn’t be happier. I love this man so much.”

Since then, Amy’s told her followers via Facebook Live that she’s a “traditional person” and is hoping to have “the wedding and the reception.” And, since Marek has never been married, she’s excited for him to have his first wedding-day experience.

Zach Roloff was unsure about Marek at first

Divorce isn’t easy on anyone, and it seems Matt and Amy’s four kids had a tough time going through their separation. When both Matt and Amy started dating again, it also likely took some getting used to. And Amy talked about how her kids had to get used to Marek being in their lives.

“I think in the beginning, maybe they hoped. … I think we’re just doing our best with the relationships that we’re now in or have been in,” Amy told Us Weekly during an interview with Matt. “We’re doing our best not to shove it in their face or anything.”

In the same interview, Amy mentioned that “Chris is, like, the new guy on the scene,” which was a tough adjustment. “So, to my kids, it’s like, ‘Wait a minute — what is mom doing? Who is this person?’” she added. “And just helping them to appreciate that life does go on and, you know, he is a person you don’t know but I’m so appreciative of the respect and everything that they have given him.”

Zach wasn’t pleased with how Amy revealed her engagement to him

Amy finally told Zach and his wife, Tori, about her engagement. But their reaction wasn’t what she expected. According to E! News, Zach appeared displeased by the news — and Amy could tell.

“I was surprised because I thought he would at least say congratulations or something like that,” Amy told the cameras. “But I wasn’t surprised because I thought he may not be ready to hear news like this and it was literally a shock because nobody expected it. I really felt bad because obviously he was quite surprised.”

As for Zach, he noted that he told his parents that he didn’t want to discuss news about their relationships while being filmed. “I don’t want to be surprised by any news of those relationships on camera,” he said. “And then she went on camera and surprised me with that news. … We’ve been doing this for 15 years and I’ve showed some of the most difficult and awkward moments of my life. There’s just been one thing that entire time that I’ve asked my parents to do with me in private and my mom couldn’t remember. It’s like, no, I’m not putting up with that.”

We’re hoping Amy and Zach are OK now that the engagement dust has settled!
