‘LPBW’: Matt Roloff Said His Relationship With His Kids Is ‘Stronger Than Ever Before’
The Roloff family has had some serious ups and downs through the years, and we’ve watched it all play out on TLC’s Little People, Big World. Matt and Amy Roloff started the show as a happy couple raising their four kids and maintaining their family business on Roloff Farms. But a few years back, the famous couple called it quits on their marriage. And most of their kids decided to part ways with the show as well.
Now, Matt is coming forward with some information about the new season that premieres on March 31. He told the First Class Fatherhood that his relationship with his children is the best it’s ever been despite past turmoil. Here’s what he said.
Matt and Amy Roloff’s kids weren’t thrilled with their divorce
Matt and Amy’s separation rocked fans, as the couple was together for over three decades. Amy also expressed that she never thought divorce would ever be in her future, and last season, she finally made the decision to move off of Roloff Farms and away from Matt completely. And it seems their kids, Molly, Jacob, Zach, and Jeremy, also didn’t love the idea of their parents divorcing.
“I think in the beginning, maybe they hoped. … I think we’re just doing our best with the relationships that we’re now in or have been in,” Amy expressed to Us Weekly regarding how their kids hoped for a reconciliation. “We’re doing our best not to shove it in their face or anything.”
Now, both Matt and Amy have moved on with serious relationships — and Amy’s engaged to Chris Marek. Amy also told the publication that her kids may have been wary about Marek, as he was “the new guy on the scene.” But they’ve accepted him into their lives now. They also seem to get along quite well with Matt’s girlfriend, Caryn Chandler.
Matt had a rumored falling out with Jacob Roloff
Zach is still a regular on the show, and Jeremy and Molly left LPBW on good terms. It’s Jacob who made the biggest splash. The youngest Roloff child publicly condemned the show on his Instagram when he left, and he swore he’d never be back on reality TV. Around this same time, rumors were out that Jacob and Matt also weren’t on good terms.
“I think when his parents divorced he put a lot of the blame on his dad,” an insider told Radar Online. “His mom was hurting for a long time, and he believes Matt was the sole cause of that — like his dad is the one that blew up the whole family.” The insider included that Matt and Jacob were “slowly building on their relationship,” though, so all hope wasn’t lost.
It seems Matt and Jacob had a chance to work on things, though, as Matt posted photos of Jacob when Jacob got married. And Jacob used Roloff Farms as his wedding reception location.
He claims his bond is now ‘stronger than ever’ with his children
It looks like Matt is verifying that his relationship with his kids has improved over the years despite the chaos of the divorce. “I do feel like my relationship with my kids is stronger than ever before,” Matt told the First Class Fatherhood podcast. “I’m a much better grandfather than I was a father just because you’ve been through it, you learn, you know what works and what doesn’t work, and so being a grandparent, it’s like getting a second chance at life.”
As for all the grandchildren, Matt is loving the time he’s spending with the little ones. “I’m really, really enjoying it. I’m a lot better listener than I’ve ever been in my life because I just enjoy hearing the grandkids talk and I enjoy my kids talk about, you know, their struggles with the grandkids,” he added. “It’s just a really fun and good and wonderful experience.”
We’re happy to hear that Matt’s getting along well with his family. And we’re excited to hear more when LPBW comes back on March 31!
