LuLaRoe Docuseries Details Inside the Business Some Former Members Refer to as a Cult
Documentaries and docuseries have been on the rise since around 2018. Netflix saw hits with ones like Abducted in Plain Sight and 2020’s Tiger King. Hulu had a hit with Fyre Fraud, a documentary that delved into the disastrous music festival. The trend doesn’t appear to be stopping anytime soon. Now Amazon Prime subscribers are about to get their hands on a documentary about LuLaRoe. The company is one of the most notorious multi-level marketing operations in the business.
LuLaRoe has recently come under fire for alleged shady practices within the company. Now, the same team that gave the world Fyre Fraud is telling both sides of the story in LulaRich.
What is the company, LulaRoe?
Most people are aware of the comfy clothing brand LuLaRoe. They’re most well known for their leggings for women. However, whispers of bad business began to overshadow the multi-level marketing monster on social media forums.
LuLaRoe was founded by married couple DeAnne and Mark Stidham. The company website touts the freedom LuLaRoe sellers will have when joining the team. “LuLaRoe is the type of business that works with your busy schedule and one that adapts to life’s many changes. As a social seller, you’ll have the freedom to run your business the way you want and the flexibility to work on the run or from home, the world is your office. As the owner of your business, you will have more time for the ones you love the most and to do the things you have never done before.”
However, in recent years, the company has been hit with multiple lawsuits, closed an entire warehouse, and laid off numerous warehouse workers. The state of Washington even filed a suit claiming the company was operating an illegal pyramid scheme.
LuLaRich will tell both sides of the story
According to the synopsis on Amazon Prime, “LuLaRich is a four-part docuseries that chronicles the unraveling of LuLaRoe. Known for their buttery soft leggings, the infamous multi-level marketing company went viral promising young mothers a work-from-home salvation. LuLaRoe’s eccentric founders recruited an astonishing army of independent retailers to peddle its increasingly bizarre and defective clothing products…until it all went wrong.”
Documentarians Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby do a deep dive into the company’s troubles and even manage to interview the Stidhams. According to Variety, “Shockingly, LuLaRoe’s co-founders DeAnne and Mark Stidham also sat down for an interview with the filmmakers, and try to happy-talk their way out of what they’ve done. Their interview stands in sharp contrast to damning footage of them (and others in the company) being deposed by the state of Washington in a lawsuit against LuLaRoe.”
There are claims of the company taking consultants to Mexico to undergo weight loss surgery. Others say the company was giving consultants leggings with mold to sell. One former consultant in the documentary refers to the business as a cult. Despite all of this, LuLaRoe is still operating.
‘LuLaRich’ will premiere this fall
Viewers are itching to know the story behind the fall of one of the multi-level marketing operations. The good news is they don’t have much longer to wait. The four-episode docuseries will make its premiere on Sept 10, 2021. All four episodes will be released at once on Amazon Prime.
