Machine Gun Kelly became a little cagey during a Sunday Today interview when host Willie Geist suggested they take a break after Kelly seemed to be agitated. “We met a man that day who did not appear to be enjoying the dream,” Geist narrated over video of Kelly looking annoyed during the interview. Did Kelly walk? Or did he open up during the interview?

Geist asked Kelly, “What does it feel like to be in the middle of this amazing storm?” Kelly looked both pensive and miffed. He replied that it felt like being in a hurricane. Geist added in his narration, “He was at times confrontational.”

“Do you wanna take a break guys?” Geist is seen asking the crew during the interview. But Kelly looked bewildered. “I don’t know what you want me to do here. You gotta ask better questions.” But the interview did not shut down and Geist shared that Kelly was both funny and open. Adding that Kelly also addressed his discomfort with the spotlight, which he referred to earlier though as a dream come true.

‘I don’t try punk. I am punk,’ he declared during the sitdown

Kelly shared during a recent show that he had so much going on in his mind at the time. “My frame on how to be human because I’m so work-obsessed,” Kelly admitted. “I’m so busy trying to block out my demons with jobs. I’m getting sick of wearing a smile. I just don’t have anything behind the smile anymore.” Kelly told Geist he hoped they kept this segment in the interview.

“I’m gonna bring how I actually feel, not just the music,” he added. Geist shared in his narration that Kelly uses music to fight anxiety, substance abuse, and the recent death of his father. When Geist pointed out that Kelly took a “leap” from hip hop to punk, Kelly said: “I don’t try punk. I am punk.” Adding, “It strikes me as odd that people even associate that as a transition with me. As if I didn’t come out with a six-inch mohawk on my first album.”

He seemed wounded, sharing that the people who were supposed to be caring for him when he was younger failed him. And the people who he was supposed to stay away from were the ones who kept him going. “The ones who you’re not supposed to be around [air quotes] were the ones that really lifted me up,” he said. “And like filled my heart with love and gave me a protection that a family couldn’t.”

Kelly recounts how only a few years ago he was hand-drawing flyers and now he’s one of the biggest music draws in the country. While he seemed serious when it came to talking about his family and music, he brightened when the discussion turned to girlfriend Megan Fox.

“I would wanna talk about Megan too,” he joked when asked how it felt to have tabloids writing about his relationship. “I don’t blame anybody for that.”

But added, “I don’t ever wanna grow up. It means that you’re like a stale loaf of bread. Maturing and becoming a better me is absolutely first on my agenda. It’s like when I walked in at the beginning of this interview, and I was like, ‘I don’t wanna be here because I feel lost today.’ It’s OK to be lost. Because there’s some days that I wake up and I know exactly where I am.”

Geist said he and Kelly “hugged it out” in the end.
