Machine Gun Kelly Just Called Pete Davidson’s Relationship With Ariana Grande a ‘Symbol of Hope’ — Here’s Why
Although Pete Davidson’s relationship with Ariana Grande didn’t work out, his best friend, Machine Gun Kelly, still believes the romance was revolutionary.
During a recent interview with radio show host Howard Stern, Kelly touched upon Grande and Davidson’s short-lived engagement. Not only did he recall being impressed by his BFF’s betrothal to the pop star, but Kelly also explained how the couple’s relationship was a “symbol of hope” for average guys.
A brief recap of Pete Davidson and Ariana Grande’s relationship
Following her split from rapper Mac Miller in May 2018, Grande began dating Davidson. The pair’s romance took off instantly, and fans watched their love story unfold with tattoo tributes and PDA-packed Instagram posts.
Less than two weeks after they started dating, the two became engaged.
The Saturday Night Live comedian proposed to the “Rain On Me” singer with a dazzling pear-shaped ring reportedly worth an estimated $100,000.
A month after Davidson popped the question, Grande opened up about his non-‘googly’ proposal while appearing on an episode of the Zach Sang Show.
“It was just really simple and really sweet,” she said. “We were just like hanging out and he had a ring and he just asked me. It was really sweet. He didn’t get on the knee or anything, thank God…oh my God, that would’ve been so googly.”
Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s romance only lasted a few months
Following a four-month-long engagement, Grande and Davidson called it quits in October 2018. At the time, sources revealed to People that the split was a mutual decision as the couple felt that “the timing wasn’t right.”
But not being ready for marriage wasn’t the only reason for their breakup.
During a February 2020 interview with Charlemagne Tha God, Davidson admitted that Miller’s death (he passed away from a drug overdose in September 2018 ) took a significant toll on his relationship with Grande.
“I think I said, like, ‘I’ll be here until you don’t want me to be here,'” he told the radio host, adding that it became difficult to continue their relationship during that tough time.
“I pretty much knew it was over around after that,” Davidson continued. “That was really horrible and I can’t imagine what that sh*t is like. That sh*t is just terrible. All I do know is that she really loved the sh*t out of him and she wasn’t putting on a show or anything.”
Machine Gun Kelly says many guys were impressed by Pete Davidson’s engagement to the singer
Though Grande and Davidson’s relationship didn’t last very long, the comedian’s best friend Machine Gun Kelly, born Colson Baker, still praises him for getting engaged to such a mega pop star.
During a Sept. 23 interview with Howard Stern, Kelly recalled being “very proud” of Davidson after he proposed to Grande because, according to the rapper, the comedian had become a “symbol of hope” to “average” men.
“I remember when like the Ari thing happened, I just looked at Pete and I was like, ‘Man, the average American dude is very proud,'” the “Bloody Valentine” crooner said. “He was just like a symbol of hope, because he was one of the boys. Just one of the guys in the basement.”
