Madonna Opens Up About Her Nude NFT— ‘I’m Giving Birth to Art’
Madonna is one of the most revered musicians and pop culture icons. Her career spans decades and her songs still ring true and are relevant today. However, the singer’s recent project choices and comments have raised several eyebrows, and her latest is no less. Madonna collaborated with Beeple to come up with NFTs for charity. She recently opened up about the nude NFTs saying, “I’m giving birth to art.”
Madonna gives birth in graphic NFT videos
Beeple is a leader in the NFT universe. Also known as Mike Winkelmann, Beeple has created VJ loops, short films, and other digital art pieces, which he sells to the top bidder. The digital artist recently paired up with “Like a Prayer” singer Madonna to come up with an NFT titled Mother of Creation.
The NFTs feature three videos of the graphically-rendered singer giving birth to nature, including insects, butterflies, and trees. The NFTs show an up-close image of Madonna’s private parts with scans of her body used to create the 3D close-ups.
The project dropped on May 10, 2022, with Madonna taking to Instagram to give her take on the project. She said in the video, “We set out to create something that is absolutely and utterly connected to the idea of creation and motherhood.”
Madonna shared in another Instagram post that she believed it’s essential for people to know that a lot of thought went into creating the videos. She asked Beeple, “Are people completely weirded out by it? It’s not often that robot centipedes crawl out of my vagina.”
The singer read text messages between her and Beeple in which she described the idea she had for the project. “We have a forest with creepy crawly bugs coming out of me. We need an urban post-apocalyptic landscape with this giant tree growing out of me,” she said.
All proceeds from the project will go to various nonprofits, including V Day, Voices of Children, and National Bailout.
Madonna defends her nude NFTs
Despite the criticism, the singer isn’t too hung up on the body-baring project or the hate that has originated from it. The New York Post quotes the “La Isla Bonita” singer saying:
“I’m doing what women have been doing since the beginning of time, which is giving birth. But on a more existential level, I’m giving birth to art and creativity, and we would be lost without both.”
The singer further likened her journey through life as a woman to a tree. She said, “Starting with a small seed, always pushing against the resistance of the earth. The endless weight of gravity.”
The Evita actor noted that the project’s purpose was to “investigate the concept of creation, not only the way a child enters the world through a woman’s vagina, but as the way an artist gives birth to creativity.”
While some people applauded the singer for the bold move, others like the New York Post labeled it a “filthy attention grab.” The site seemed the least bit interested in the singer’s antics noting that Madonna loves pulling off stunts that involve her ripping off her clothes and calling it art.
Madonna rose to fame in 1978
The singer moved to New York to pursue modern dance in 1978. However, it wouldn’t be until 1983 that she would achieve stardom. Following her self-titled album, Madonna caught the world with her vocals, with the album peaking at number eight on the Billboard 200. It also produced two top 10 singles; “Lucky Star” and “Borderline.”
Her style revolutionized the fashion trends in the ’80s. Her popularity continued to soar with her second album, Like a Virgin and the album’s lead track dominated the Hot 100 chart for six consecutive weeks. Madonna continued making music and venturing into acting, appearing in Who’s That Girl, Body of Evidence, Evita, and Swept Away.
