The Netflix series Maid is taking the streaming platform by storm. It features Margaret Qualley as Alex, a young woman with a 2-year-old daughter who sneaks away from her emotionally abusive husband, Sean (played by Nick Robinson), in the middle of the night. The story follows Alex’s tale through becoming a maid, navigating her difficult relationship, and growing with her daughter. Will fans see a Maid Season 2?
Is ‘Maid’ based on a true story?
Qualley’s portrayal of Alex in the Netflix series Maid feels ultra true-to-life, and any single mother who’s struggled will likely identify with her story. So, is Maid based on a true story? It is. In fact, the hit show used the memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land as source material.
Land’s story closely follows what Alex experiences in the show. In Land’s memoir, she recounts how she got pregnant in college and had to clean wealthy peoples’ homes to make ends meet.
“There was such an erasure of my whole self in that job,” Land told Brut, “and I felt very disposable. And I felt like I didn’t matter when that job was everything to me. If I didn’t have that job, then I would be back in a homeless shelter within a couple of weeks.”
Will ‘Maid’ have a season 2?
So, will fans see a Maid Season 2? While the Netflix series is a major hit for the streaming platform, there are no current plans for a season 2. And Maid showrunner Molly Smith Metzler spoke with Decider about revisiting Alex’s story. And it seems Smith isn’t too keen on the idea, no matter how much attention the first season of the show received.
“I will say that this is such a labor of love, this show,” Metzler told the publication. “I’m in love with all these characters, and I could write Alex for the rest of my life. You know, she’s just in my heart. But I do feel like we tell her story, so I’m not sure what that would look like.”
With that said, Metzler isn’t too opposed to a second season of Maid if the story didn’t center around Alex. “I do think there’s a lot of maids out there, there’s a lot of domestic workers who are experiencing stories that are as bad, if not worse than, Stephanie Land’s,” she said. “I think it would be very exciting and a dream world to get to see a different maid’s story in another season. Someone from a totally different geographic with totally different life experience and who probably is a mom.”
Does Alex end up with Nate? How does her story end in season 1?
So, how does Alex’s story end in Maid Season 1? Early in the season, Nate comes across Alex when she’s with her daughter, Maddy, sleeping in a ferry terminal. Later on, Nate lends Alex a car to drive — and he asks her out, making it known he’s divorced and available. Alex declines at first, as she doesn’t believe she’s in a position to date.
Later on, we see Alex fantasize about dating Nate, but nothing happens between them. Alex and Nate don’t end up together, as the first season mainly centers on her wanting her independence after her abusive relationship with Sean.
Will we see Alex and Nate again in Maid Season 2 — if season 2 happens at all? We’ll have to wait and see.
