Cannon, on the other hand, was working on Wild ‘N Out as a host. In her autobiography, The Making of Mariah Carey, Carey wrote that she’d heard Cannon say “nice things” about her. But the two didn’t start dating until 2008, when she cast him as her love interest in the music video for her song “Bye Bye.” Carey shared in her book that she was attracted to Cannon because he made her feel safe.
According to Brides, Cannon popped the big question twice. First, he used a 17-carat pink diamond cleverly hidden in a ring pop candy. Later, he proposed during a romantic helicopter ride over New York. Carey noted the proposal felt like a fairytale.

In April 2008, Cannon and Carey shocked the world when they announced they’d tied at her island home in the Bahamas. “We only told people who had to know,” Carey told People. “Only about four people knew we were going down there to get married.” She deemed the event “really beautiful and sweet,” calling it “a spiritual moment.”
