Carey was born in 1970, and in spite of the difficult circumstances that surrounded her childhood, she was determined to make an impact in the music industry. By the late ’80s, she had started to establish some industry connections, and in 1990, her debut album became a smash hit.

Carey’s follow-up albums, Music Box, Merry Christmas, and Daydream, were all major hits, establishing not only her incredible vocal range but her connection to the holiday season as well.

In the early 2000s, Carey went through a highly-publicized breakdown, severing ties with her record label and creating a new identity for herself. While this period of turmoil might have destroyed many artists, Carey was able to overcome her difficulties and come back bigger than ever.

To this day, Carey continues to surprise and delight, releasing new projects and entertaining her millions of fans around the world.

Mariah Carey recently wrote a bombshell memoir

In September 2020, Carey released her long-awaited memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. For fans, the book provides an opportunity to really get to know Carey, behind the diva facade that she has cultivated.

In the book, Carey opens up about her relationships, including her “not normal” marriage to record executive Tommy Mottola, who was responsible for helping launch her to fame.

Carey also detailed her relationship with certain members of her family, including her step-siblings, with whom she is no longer close, and her grandmother — whom Carey believes only approved of her due to her unique physical appearance.

One of the most interesting passages in Carey’s book is the one where she describes her experiences as a biracial child.

Carey details how she used a brown crayon to color her father for a family portrait when she was only four years old. In response to the school project, Carey vividly remembers how her teachers “cackling hysterically,” telling the child that she used the wrong shade.

Furthermore, Carey’s maternal grandmother, who was estranged from her daughter, allowed the little girl to visit, and not her step-siblings. “I was a 12-year-old little girl and didn’t quite understand why she only invited me,” Carey said. “Looking back, I suspect it was because I was blond-ish and very fair for a mixed kid.”

Later, when Carey was married to Tommy Mottola, she continued to experience subtle racism. “From the moment Tommy signed me, he tried to wash the ‘urban’ (translation: Black) off of me,” Carey stated.

She also describes how Mottola tried to make her more “mainstream” so that she would appeal to a wider audience, in his mind. Fortunately, Carey was eventually able to emancipate herself from the situation, working to establish a new identity for herself.

These days, she is beloved by people of all ages, both for her talent and her transparency.
