Mariah Carey Won’t Sing This Christmas Song Because She Doesn’t ‘Think Anyone Can Do It Justice’
During interviews, Mariah Carey named her favorite Christmas songs of all time. She said she refuses to cover one of them because she doesn’t think anyone can do it justice. Carey said she “lives” for another one of her favorite Christmas songs. Carey also discussed why she tends to sing traditional Christmas carols instead of relatively new holiday favorites.
Mariah Carey feels bad that she prefers these Christmas classics to her own holiday tracks
During an interview with ET Canada, Carey named her favorite Christmas songs ever. “My two favorites would be Nat King Cole‘s ‘The Christmas Song,'” Carey said. “It’s been remade by so many people, but I’ve never remade it because I don’t think anyone can do it justice.”
Carey also praised another famous Christmas song. “There’s a song that I really, truly love called ‘This Christmas’ by Donnie Hathaway,” Carey added. “I live for that too. I’ve written a lot of Christmas songs, so I feel bad leaving my own out.”
Why Mariah Carey mostly likes to sing traditional Christmas carols instead of relatively new songs
In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Carey also mentioned her love of “The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)” and “This Christmas.” Carey also cited Bing Crosby‘s “White Christmas” as another one of her favorite Christmas songs. She said she prefers to sing older songs instead of her favorite Christmas songs.
“I can’t touch the originals, so I’ve left those songs alone,” she said. “For the most part, I’ve stuck to more traditional carols like ‘Joy to the World,’ ‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’ and ‘Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.'” Notably, Carey covered all three of the traditional carols she mentioned on her album Merry Christmas, which features the original version of her hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”

The Christmas Song reached No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the chart for 63 weeks.

Donny Hathaway reached No. 89 on the Billboard 200, remaining on the chart for 21 weeks. Carey loves “The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)” and “This Christmas” and it seems listeners in the United States embraced the songs as well.
